I was replacing battery cables when I came upon a small, beat up..maybe4"x6" cooler with two braided lines...with a large ammount of oil mist around it...Is it an oil cooler..and if so..if it is leaking, what about replacements?
thanks

If it's on the front edge of the subframe in front of the driver it's the power steering cooler. They're leak-prone. About the only way I know of to fix it is to cruise junkyards for clean ones, which do exist but are hard to find.

when I found my old 92's power steering cooler was leaking, I traced the leak to the lines coming into the cooler. I simply lopped off about an inch off each one and stuck em back on....bingo! no more leakage! :thumb:

Great advice if the item is the powersteering fluid cooler.

If it's acutally the oil cooler...it's between the block and the oil filter. Those leak like seives too. You can take it off of the block with a 30MM socket(same as your front hub nuts) and replace this:

Thats the old gasket on the left and on the right is a standard oil filter gasket. I just removed it from the filter...tossed the filter in the trash and installed it on my oil cooler....like this...

Or you can buy the proper O-ring for the oil cooler behind the oil filter from Ford.

My powersteering cooler was all nasty along with my lines. I replaced the lines and bought a new cooler - good to go now. The cooler is still readily available from Ford and not very expensive. And looks great to boot!

I hit a truck tire recap about a month ago and am still finding damage!
thats probably why it`s just recently developed a thirst for steering fluid...

Really? I think I got the discontinued-not-available talk the last time I looked for one.

I was afraid that would be the case when I saw mine. I picked it up in the summer of '05. Ordered it and had it a few days later, my parts guy said he had plenty at his warehouse and that it wasn't discontiuned.

I still have the part number if anyone would like it.
