Shops to weld mufflers???

I went to a couple shops today to see how much they'd charge to weld on some Flowmasters or whatever I decide to order.

The first shop said that they wouldn't even do it. The liability is too high (or something like that) that they don't even want to risk it. The guy suggested checking with this place called Excessive Auto Sports (wouldn't you know it, it was the local "ricer" hang out, as well as the ricer performance shop.)

So I go to Excessive Auto Sports and ask a mechanic there how much they'd charge to weld on some Flowmasters onto a Taurus SHO. He said that they'd done 10 or 12 SHO muffler jobs before: the Borla setup and the Dynomax (I think that's what he said). Anyway, he said that they'd have to do a "kit" for a SHO because the "pipes are setup differently, so the muffler would hang down too low and you could see the whole muffler."

I asked how much they'd charge to install one of those "kits" bought from Summit Racing or something and he said about $75.

Is this guy correct? I thought it was the norm to just weld on a set of Flowmasters. Hmm, let me know...

I have been looking for someone to weld my Borlas on for me and the cheapest that I have been able to find is around $200 for the whole job. But I pulled a few trings and got a mechanic buddy of mine to do it for free.

Kit? Kit? You don't need no stinkin' kit! All kidding aside, go to the Flowmaster website, and find the closest dealer/muffler shop to you, go to them and tell them you want 2 40 series mufflers installed. While they're at it, have them remove the resonator. It serves no purpose other than baffling the flow of your exhaust and cutting down on the throaty growl. It will be located just prior to where the pipe splits in two at the rear of the car. To retain the stock appearance, have them stretch and re-attach your stock tips. You're good to go from there. Wow! Pretty steep prices! If you ever make it into St. Cloud, MN, look up MG's Exhaust. They welded my Rhino mufflers on as well as the factory tips, and total labor was only about $20.

Does anyone that lives close to me (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) know of a good shop that would weld on some Flowmasters for me? I guess that stupid ricer shop is no good... cuss

And BTW: Does anyone have any opinion on the Flowmasters that have the dual tips on them? I saw them on a pic of a Green Gen 3 and liked the look of them.

FWIW when I had my bullet's installed I went to two "franchise shops" and they would not touch it. Believe it or not Fair Muffler, which is a franchise, was more than happy to do the work. Cost,IIRC about $50.00 including putting the tips on correctly. I would suggest looking for an independent shop in your area. FWIW

I went to Midas. They didn't want to do it but would not come right out and say it. I finally asked out right if they were in the muffler business or not. And if not I will be on my way down the street. They ended up putting on the mufflers, cutting out the resonator and installed new bolts on my 3rd cat so I could remove it when I got home. Intestingly the said the glass packs would make my car sound like a chain saw. blub, blub, blub

Well, I found a place called "Exhaust Pros" that will do it. My friend's uncle went there for his 68 Camaro and said that they did an awesome job on his mufflers (and he usually does all his car work by himself in his car shop).

I went to Exhaust Pros and they said they'd do it for $40 labor per muffler, so it would be $80 labor total. That's kinda expensive though. SHOZ123---I will check out my local Midas shop and see if they'd do it. BTW, what are glass packs?

SHOERwin--- I'll be sure to tell them to cut out the resonator. Is doing this illegal at all? Will any exhaust place be willing to do it?

Not illegal at all. They'll know what it is, and you will get the greatest sound with your new mufflers. thumb

I found a place to do it (Exhaust Pros) for $80. My friend's uncle (who owns and operates his OWN shop) got his '68 Camaro's mufflers done here and said they did an awesome job. Is this charging too much, though?

I'll probably check into Midas. Did they do a good job? My dad said they are terrible at what they do, of course that was probably from a long time ago for him.

Anyone ever have a Meineken do it? They're supposedly do custom exhaust installing. I'll probably check with them tomorrow.

I actually was talking to a co-worker about getting my mufflers installed and he's the one that recommended the shop I took my SHO to.
I'd do what SHOWHAT9 said and look at an independent shop. Wouldn't hurt to ask others who have had exhaust work done in your area to see if they recommend someone.

I've been looking at Magnaflow mufflers. What is the right category or model numbers for our cars? Street? or Race? I'm confused by their site.

Also, what's a good place to order them from?

The Magnaflows that I have are the "wide open XL" version. They sound good on the stock pipes.

The Magnaflows I had were part number 11235 4"x9" Oval. 2.25" inlet/outlet offset-offset. I liked the Magnaflows. Had three inch round stainless tips.
