I just bought a 2012 V6 turbo charged SHO with 42,000 miles. Unfortunately when I bought it the chrome trim around taillights were peeled and yellowed, not pretty. Ford said its a defect asked body shops if its fixable with scuffing and chrome paint. Apparently not a good idea at all. New taillights from ford installed are 1,000 and would think the same thing would happen. Perhaps after market taillights with the hope that the company/manufacturer uses a deferent chrome. Any help/insight on fixing or replacing would be a huge help.
Thanks!
MIKE

SEL taillights will eliminate the chrome entirely. look around eBay or junkyards for cheapest pricing.

And yes you can sand down the fake chrome and paint over if you so wish. or simply plastidip.

Yes get the SEL tails the 12 SHO's are junk. I had 2 sets replaced under warranty in the 3 years I had my 12. The lying dealer said anything from it's not a problem that Ford knows about to I was using soap that was too strong when I washed the car

Thanks! So a 2012 SEL taillight set will match perfectly and free of that defect? Id rather just sand and paint but 4 body shops said it won't work doing that...

Multiple people here have sanded and painted you need to use a particular adhesion permoter (made by 3m I believe) after sanding down the chrome. You could always wrap in vinyl too

Sel lights have no chrome. Take taul lights off. Use a dremel tool to sand off chrome.

ok thinking sanding off chrome, applying primer of sorts, then just paint black..I assume that would look better than paining chrome..whats the best/strongest spray.....plasti drip?
Thanks!

Ford replaced the ones on my 2011 once as it was under 36K, peeled again, didn't worry about it after, sold it when I got my 2016, thankfully it doesn't have the horrible chrome.
