Well the problem that my wife told me about a few weeks
ago just happend while I was driving the car tonight.
The speedometer suddenly stopped working and it seemed
that when you floored the gas pedal the transmission did
not want to kick down a gear. The car seemed to hesitate
at times but the transmission seemed to shift perfectly
(except for shifting down) I had to shift it manually
into second gear. Also I noticed that my steering was
stiff like when I turn on my SARC switch. Don't know if
all of this is related but suddenly after I stopped and
let the car rest for a while, it is back to normal. I
drove it all the way home from a friends house and it
ran excellent (no problems). Has anyone had this happen
to them before? Hopefully someone can help me out and
pin point the problem....

Got to be something with the VSS. That's what tells the PCM how fast you are going and then adjust the SARC for that speed.

Vehicle Speed Sensor. It mounts to the transmission. It's used for all sorts of things on an ATX. On the Gen1/2 MTX the speedometer cable is connected to it. It's used for the cruise control and to boost the idle when rolling.

that is soooooooooo the VSS. Be careful, I'd get it from the dealer, since the parts stores have so many different #'s. If you need a dealer discount, lemmie know. FWIW, it's already gone buh bye in Karen's car.

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking speed sensor, but have no clue where it is, how much it is or how hard to replace.

It looks like it is a PITA on the V8 SHO. The Helm doesn't even list the procedure for the Gen 3 SHO. At any rate it is on the tranny behind under the PCM somewhere.

Thanks Paul for looking it up in the Helms, I'm hoping it is not an expensive fix. I'll have to open my hood and take a look around the tranny and see if I can find it.
