sho automaitic transmission compatability

(Pop-Up)This is an electronically controlled version of the "AXOD". 1991-1993 models had major reliability problems, but later models were less trouble. This transmission was renamed the "AX4S" in 1994 although it was still referred to as the "AXOD-E" until 1995. This was used on most Vulcans, all 3.2L SHOs (slightly different internals), all 3.8L V6s, and the 1991 2.5L I4. The 3.2L SHO versions has a different final drive ratio than the ones mated to the other motors. There is conflicting information as to when the production of the AX4S was stopped....

So the bottom line.....CAN A TRANNY BE USED OUT OF A NON-SHO???????

only if you want to shred it with a quickness... the internals are much beefier in the SHO, which are still inadequate.
the sho trans has a extra clutch per pack so there is more avaliable friction.

the answer to your question is yes. the only thing you have to watch is your torque converter selection. the 93 sho trans is a 23 spline the 94-95 is a 25 spline (the imput shaft). I don't know what the slows use but as long as you are on their tc it shouldent matter i would think. shifting might be a bit goofy if you use a trans with a different final drive ratio.

Using a trans with a diffrent chain ratio other than what the PCM is coded for will cause TC lockup problems.

ASFAIK the AX4S is/was used in the Taurus with the Vulcan motor (along with a random sprinkling of AX4Ns) until the end of production.
