Okay, how the heck do I do this? I have my engine taken apart so where do I start? I may be able to get the shim kit for rent in the classifieds and I want to be ready. I have never done a 60K before now (well, I took apart the engine, so it is a bit more than the 60K). I have the heads off and I'm doing the rod bearings as well.

First you need to a specific task. Tell us that task my fellow SHO brother, the help will follow.

You do not need to take the heads off to do the valve adjustment. You can get the shim tools from a vendor or ebay. You can rent a shim kit from SHONut, SHO Pheonix or if you are lucky SHOShop.

If you want to you can go to the junk yard and get shims there. I did that and I have a decent collection. I know Fred is selling his shims but he is asking for a bit of money for his.

If you need specific help I can help you if you need it.

You can get shims at a Yamaha dealer. I bought a bunch when I was installing my stage 1 cams for $5 each. They just handed me a box full of shims and let me pick the ones I needed.
