RWD tq converter?

RWD sho powered fairlane build, i am using an aod out of a 92 mustang that is the non computer controled version with an adapter. Now my question is what tq converter do you guys think i should run? this is more of a down the line concern, but it would be nice to get everything in order now. Other things to consider, my gears are 3.73 tires are 26.75 tall, and probably going to build a low boost turbo set up for it as well.


i know most of you will say t5, but this is a show/cruiser car and i already have the aod..might as well use it

With the aod and the (canfield?) adapter, you can almost run the stock Mustang converter. You will need a custom flex plate - basically a Mustang flex plate with the bolt pattern for the SHO crank. The stall speed of the converter will be based on how you wish to use the vehicle, but iirc the SHO converters were around 2600-2700 stall and I would not go up much if any from there. For sure you want a lockup converter, unless its a track-only car.

There are two difficulties: 1. the aod converters will have a larger pilot than the opening in the SHO crank, so you will need the pilot re-sized to fit. 2. the adapter thickness will need to be accounted for so the converter fits on the trans input shaft at the proper location - you cannot just let it hang off an extra 1/2". If you choose to have the flex plate dished that amount, then you need to account for that in how the starter fits up.

do you see a problem with getting a spacer made the same thinkness as the adapter. bringing the tq and flexplate out 1/2". i know i would then have to figure something out with the starter and still get the flexplate redrilled

I wouldn't do an adapter between the crank and the flexplate. I would do 4 spacers between the flexplate and the torque converter, as long as they are not so long as to keep the pin in the center of the flexplate from engaging the hole in the crank. That way, the flexplate is bolted securely to the crank and the torque converter is still centered on the crank. You just need to have the spacers machined to +/- .0005" in length so you know the torque converter doesn't wobble.

I don't know. This is a thought and probably a bad one. Just voicing a idea and probably not a good one. Can the thickness of adapter be milled off the trans and still have enough of the thickness where bolts go in to be ok. I know stupid idea just had to say it. Maurice
Watching this one carefully if my 3.0 A4ld turn out bad.
