I've searched quite a bit on the forum and couldn't find a straight answer. I'm looking at a set of 17x7.5 wheels with a 35mm offset for my '90. Is that doable with the rear quarters or would I have to roll them? Most likely would be running a 235/45. Any info would be appreciated.

Rims that are sold commercially for the 90 have an offset between positive 38 and 48 mm, with most falling around 42 mm. The positive means the center of the tire / rim is offset towards the outside of the car.
It would seem your request for positive 35 mm means the wheel/ tire is sunk a little back towards the middle of the car, so the outside rolling of the fenders is less likely to be needed. Your issue would be - does the inside of the tire begin to touch your struts (since you are further back in than usual).
People are reluctant to give advice on this because that strut - touch issue is fairly common, and if it happened, you would have to shim out your rims with washers or spacers.
Of course the width of the tire/ rim has an affect on this situation as well - less width means less chance to contact something (either the struts or the fender).

I was under the opposite impression. The smaller the number of the positive offset the more the wheel is pushed out. I know the 17x7.5's I had on my gen 2 with a 42mm offset were super close to the rear struts and were really tucked under the quarters.

Correct. Higher positive offset means closer to the suspension, lower positive offset means pushed further away.

To be sure, see Tire Rack \ Research and Advice \ Learn \ Wheels \ Offset.

I think a large positive offset, puts the CL of the tire further in, but I am getting a headache trying to figure it out for sure.

I think you'll be fine, but it will be close. You might have to roll or trim the rear fender/plastic a little.

Lower offset moves the wheel further out (away from the strut) compared to a higher offset.

I know it's a bit late but I have 35mm on my 93 and they rub the front fenders on big dips with a 225 55 16. I'm on eibachs with 1 cool cut out.

Good to know. I was thinking about cutting a coil from my front Eibachs as well. Thanks!

I'm going to be selling a pair of 1 coil cut front Eibachs here shortly if you're interested. You can throw them on to see if you have a problem with your setup before cutting yours. I wouldn't want much for them just shoot me a PM. You can even have the 1 good rear one I have too. I accidentally cut the wrong side of my one rear coil rendering my set useless now.

Update: I put 225/50 BFG's on the wheels and test fitted them. They just barely fit in the rear. Quarters will definitely need to be rolled, but after that there should be no issues.
