Engine starting ticking then got louder to a knocking sound.. not steady but would fluctuate then as reved got louder.. Then it seemed to stay steady. Oil light flickered at idle then car eventually would die.. Whenever i tried to start it it seemed like it really hard to turn over and almost like it was locked up.. If it was out of time would this cause the hard starting?? I took off the valve covers and the rear cam chain was loose.. the tensioner was ok.. Next I took off the upper timing cover. The timing belt seemed tight.. Nothing too loose to worry about..So this is what I'm wondering.. Did the tensiner go out and cause the belt or chain to skip a toot or get out of line??

I think SO.

If EVER the oil light starts to flicker, under ANY circumstance. Turn the motor off.
It's either one of two problems, A) bad oil pressure sending unit. OR B)A spun rod bearing (<your case)

The loose timing chain is another issue alltogether, and is the least of your worries now.

PEOPLE(to the newbs).... Rod Bearings are a MUST with anything over 90k!!!

IS it really a rod bearing??

Why is the sound coming from the top of the engine.. After i got the car started again the noise would come and go depending on the rpm range.. If it was a rod or a bearing or a wrist pin wouldn't it be knocking extremely loud all of the time?? Also when i had the car some 20,000 miles ago the oil light would flicker at exteremely low rpms when it would almost stall at a stoplight.. cOULD THE BEARINGS OF BEEN GOING OUT AND THAT ONE LAST 8000 RPM BURNOUT DO IT IN??

it dosen't have to be consistant. yes, your 8000 rpm burnout could have toasted them even further. take Josh's advice and mine, and i'm sure everyone else on here would agree. its your rod bearings...
