Restore & Z-MAX

I was wondering if anyone uses or used Restore before. It is suppose to recondition the O-rings on the pistons.?. Has anyone used this? Also has anyone used Z-Max in there car? specifically they're transmission. I have an ATX with 75k on it and was wondering if this product would prolong its life. Thanks boss.

Snake oil. Go to Google, Yahoo, whatever your favorite search engine is and look under: zmax lawsuit, prolong lawsuit, etc. Save your money.

Properly maintained, the SHO motor can last 300K+ miles. Be sure to use a high-quality oil (Castrol GTX is the forum 'fav). The ATX tranny however can be less than reliable, but if you don't abuse your car and change the ATF fluid at the specified 30K intervals, you probably can delay problems until well over 100K.

ok, screw the z-max. What about Restore? It is suppose to go in when you change your oil and my mechanic told me i should use some because i take my car off the road in the winters and is puffing a little smoke(not that bad at all). what do u think? I have been running mobil 10w30 is it ok to switch over to a synthetic? Thanks.

I have used Restore on a high mileage Rocket 350 & a 305 Chevy with "ok" results. I would NOT use it on a SHO engine, especially seeing the recent spun bearing due to "gunk" in the oil pan. I'm not saying it's Restore, I'm saying it's likely an additive that was used. I'd rather put in a $2 qt of oil every oil change than have to pay out $3500 for a built up engine swap done right.

ok thanks. what about synthetics? is it ok to switch over. I've heard no from a friend, but he doesn't work on SHO engines. I've noticed eek! there is a big difference between a mechanic and SHO mechanic.

zmax is snake oil. Restore actually works to some extent. There are lots of people have used it in their car's with varying compression readings between the cylinders with good results. I've used it in my truck for the last 4000 miles.

Actually Restore has a whole bunch of moly in it. Moly is expensive stuff. A lot of motor oils have a little bit of moly in them. The only thing stopping them from using more moly in their formulations is that the stuff is fairly expensive. That alone justifies not lumping Restore in with all the other snake oils.

I use the synthetic blend 5W30 in the winter, and 10W30 in the summer. Some folks here report an increased chance of premature cam lobe wear with the 100% synthetics, although IMHO it seems to be more anecdotal than empirical.

What are you hoping to accomplish with an additive? With 75K, your motor is barely broken in for an SHO. If it's running well, just spend your $$$ on quality routine maintenance. If you are having a specific problem, tell us about it and maybe we can help you figure it out rather than trying to mask it with snake oil.

Try a treatment of Auto-RX. It is not snake oil, and it works slowly over a few hundred miles to clean the metal in your engine. I ran it on my 94 cause it was fed a diet of the big Q (Quaker State) and it was very very very honey colored on the metal looking in thru the filler. After about 500 miles and 2 new filters my engine looked spotless, bare shiny alum. It is still very clean at 73k when I had my valve covers off to do my 60k valve lash. looky here

The debate about synthetic rages on, but there are quite a few ppl that use it and love it. I love mine.

It's a engine flush trick that some old timers practice. Some people swear it works. I'm sure you could find all the discussion you could want on http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

I don't think I'm brave enough to try something as crazy sounding as ATF motor flush. But I am leaning towards trying out some of that AutoRX stuff. Netviper, that valvetrain is clean!!! thumbs_u

netviper, the valve train does look clean, but without a "before" picture, we will just have to take your word for the effectiveness of the additive. I have noticed in several pictures posted in this Forum that the orange colored rubbing blocks on the timing chain tensioners appear to wear much faster than the black rubbing blocks used in the early SHOs. There appears to be at least as much wear as on the rubbing blocks on my engine at 269,000 miles here.
