Dash Cracks

I have the same problem. I was referred to American Dash Cap, a company that makes plastic look alike covers for cracked dashes. They have a unit for the Taurus of my year (1989), however, they could not tell me if that cap would fit the SHO? Does anybody know if the dash on the SHO is different than the regular Taurus of the same year? The Dash Cap runs about $100 and supposedly is easy to install (definately easier than a whole new dash).

Ya it is. They have 2, one for '86 - '89 & one for 89.5. There's someone around here that I met with the plastic covers and I wasn't too thrilled about it as it was cracked too. It was neat that it was a complete replica of the top portion of the dash but I'm not looking to mask the problem but to repair. It seems to me there is no real testamony of someone actually repairing the dashes. With all the technology out there, you would think there would be.

I guess I'm missing something here...

Buy the dash repair kit recommended in the link I provided in post #6 above and then write your own testimonial!

I'm going to try the repair kit. If it does'nt work I can always try the dash cap. But I have a question. What is a 89.5 Taurus? Was there also an 89? I'm assuming the dash is different on each (?)

Stop digging. Please.

Chances of finding an uncracked 20 year old dash (even a taurus), just by strolling up to the yard and having a look around is pretty slim. Then, try removing it and installing it without cracking it. It's just not on my list of things that are possible.

I pulled this one out of my "junk" '89 month ago. And this car was always stored outside. uncovered.

100% crank free. :nut:

And even wrestling to get it out didnt produce any cracks.

MuscleCar, during the PowerBlock collection on Spike TV, just had a program on where they did repairs and dyeing to the interior of a mid-70's Buick. During the program they showed the basic steps to repairing a cracked dash. Here's a link to their website for that episode. Hope it helps. :salute:

Dashboard Cracks Repair

I started repairing the dash with the repair kit from Eastbrook, but the surface was as brittle as an eggshell. So I bought the dash cap from www.amercandashcaps.com. The installation was fairly straight forward (a little bit of sanding and grinding) and I am very satisfied so far. We will see how it stands up in the Florida sun. See attached photos.

Did you order the Lt. Titanium color from them? Just wondering because it looks alot lighter than the rest of the dash. Not sure how good their color matching is.

I just went to their website looking for gen 2 dash caps. It appears they only have them for non-airbag dashes. I sent them an email asking if they have them for the 92-95 Taurus with the passenger airbag? That would be a nice alternative to replacing or dying the dash. Mine is cracking on the ends, where they meet the door panels, and by the passenger vent.

I may get one of these for the 89, but only if I can get a really close match. I think they come standard in black, and you have to buy the interior paint and paint them.

I had several cracks in my 91' SHO dash. The only dash caps I could find were for G and GL models, no provisions for auto-temp and auto-lamp sensors. I ended up getting a Dash Mat from JC Whitney, set up with provisions for auto-temp and auto-lamp. It was easy to install and, after a few months to settle in, it fit real well across the dash. It also really cut down on the creaking noises in the dash. All for about 1/3 the cost of a good dash cap. :salute:

The auto lamp and auto temp sensors are built into the speaker grills and all model have those.
