Doing a front 60k on the 89, so I rented a harmonic balancer puller from O'Reillys yesterday. It worked fine in getting the big crank pulley/dampener off (had to get the wife to hold the brake pedal down). Now, according to SHOPhoenixproject, I can use the 2 long lower timing cover screws to thread into both sides of the timing belt pulley (ok, works, did that). Here's the problem....the bolt heads are so small that they "slip through" the big bracket of the harmonic balancer pulley; so it has nothing to brace against. Should I get some thick, heavy-duty washers to put beneath the bolt heads? I tried some at home, but they were not big enough (they bent and the bolt slipped through). According to my receipt, I gotta return this darn thing within 48 hours. That's the only thing I have left to remove and I'm ready to install crank, cam seals, cps, etc.

Any suggestions?

I actually have two pairs of washers I use for this. Get some washers that the head of the bolt will catch, then get a larger washer that the smaller washer will catch. They live with my puller.

And when reassembling, make sure the timing pulley is fully seated before putting on the crank pulley.

Then torque the snot out of it.

Awesome!...that's what I figured I had to do. Thanks guys. I really wanted to save $ and not to the water pump and cps...but it's crazy when you're literally right there and it's staring at you---lack of extra funds or not, I'd be foolish to not change them. I really don't want to have to go back in here again anytime soon; it's time consuming to remove and clean all this stuff.

Got it out using some $2 fender washers against the bolt heads, a breaker bar wedged between the wheel studs, and the handle from my jack as a cheater bar. That thing was on there tighter than a gnat's ass.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but that would be a bad idea.

as long as you protecting the shaft, ( I have a piece of brass turned down for this )what harm is it going to do? your still pulling it the same way impact will put a lot less pressure on it than a cheater bar would, also more on the centerline of the puller, for a straighter pull..... just don't do a dry exit with it,
**** does wonders .... some times you have to pull it out a little slop some oil mixed with Anti-Seize, and push it back in
