My GM Gen III has seen far too many winters. The engine and trans will be transplanted into a better body. I would like to replace the rear main seal while I have it out. Does anyone know where to get one?

I looked it up. One of the few times the dealer had an SHO part. I love the $1200.00 price tag on the complete gasket set.

I dont get it... The ONLY place you can get a rear main IIRC is the dealer.

Edit: I think I get it now, you got the seal... eye sea.

Yeah, I had given the local part stores a call only to find out that they only carry the front crank seal not the rear. I'll order both front and rear once I know for sure about the transplant. On the Ford parts site they had a complete gasket set for $1200.00 WOW!

It'll be a shame, the GM will be parted out after 7 years of service to our family.

Well, the dealer showed they had the timing cover gaskets and rear seal. I was told they were back ordered. I waited 3 weeks only to be told they don't make the seals anymore...err! Anyone have spares?

Back in the day some said the V6 Duratec had a very similar rear main seal. May also want to check out the 2.5L Contour Duratec motor.

Well the 3.0L Duratec is not going to work. It's dimension for the seal are Width=.427"; Shaft=3.465"; Outside diameter=4.2680"; Bore=4.252IN

The 2.5L Duratec V6 rear seal is Shaft Size=3.625", Housing Bore=4.24, Outer Diameter=4.256, Width=0.39in

Width on the V8 rear seal is 0.35"

Check with Doug Lewis at fordspecialists.com he usually has some hard to find parts sitting on a shelf.

I will also give Doug a call on the timing cover set.
