my 93 down-shifts real hard at 60 mph. I don't know if it is the tranny or the pcm. I heard that the pcm in those has to be re-calibrated or replaced. any one had a similar problem?

Well 1st off this is indicative of slamming on the gas pedal and hurting on the tranny.

2ndly, mileage? Tranny rebuild ever? This kind of stuff helps us out.

Thanks for the welcome. yeah that usually happens when I mat the gas. 2nd, the car has about 140k. the tranny came out of a car with 160k, but was supposed to only have about 60k on it. I will never buy another used tranny again. I read on all-data about the pcm not being calibrated right and my car has all the symptoms of that. but atx's are really bad with trannys.

well unfortunately your car is a 93, the worst year for the ATX tranny. My suggestion to you would be to buy a D4U1 ECU, TedB LPM and have your tranny fluid flushed and replace it with some type of synthetic fluid.

Chances are if it is your ECU this should help. Otherwise it could be tranny rebuild time.

Do a search for the D4U1 computer here using the search function, this has been gone over and over again about the improvements it has.

You can get this upgrade from mikey at www.midwestSHO.com

Not really. At 60mph light acceleration will cause a downshift.

The problem is common with the ATX and very common with a 93'. It's your torque converter unlocking.

Before you buy any parts, from me or from anyone, run the codes and see if you get any 6xx codes. These pertain to the tranny and though their presence is unlikely, the few times they do show up they greatly aid in diagnosis.

Secondly, verify that both your motormounts and subframe bushings are not worn. Either of these will cause the conditions described.

when I check codes, should I check koer, koeo. also, it's not motormounts becauase the car revs like its in nuetral and slams into gear. i've only done that once or twice on accident. and cris is right it only happens when I mash the gas. Its like the car wants to downshift twice the firts shift into 3rd is ok but into second is painful.

This is something you didn't mention. If the engine revs then catches, the transmission is slipping. You will need a rebuild in short order.

Unfortunately, 93_SHo_Off, I have to agree with Mr. Kopstain's comments on this. Mike Evans is correct about the converter unlocking when you take your foot off the gas (all Gen 2 ATX's will do this under the factory programming), but I don't think the TPS is to blame here. Out of curiosity, did you have a chance to check your codes? If the problem isn't sensor-related (eg. VSS or TSS), then I'd tend to think that worn friction materials (clutches, et al) were to blame for the kickdown runaways you describe.

yes, I checked codes and there were no tps codes so I think that my original theory of a bad trans was correct. thanks for all the help guys.
