Hey everyone,
Just bought my 3rd SHO a couple weeks ago (Red '95 ATX) and it's in a little tougher shape than I was hoping (mechanically that is; the body & interior are still pretty good)

I decided I'm going to pull the motor out because it has quite a few leaks, etc and thought it would be best & easiest to just pull it & start replacing seals & some typical parts. I need your help on suggestions for what to replace when I do it. Here's what I"m thinking so far

1) Plugs & wires (of course)
2) MAF Sensor (had erratic readings & was throwing MAF code)
3) DPFE Sensor
4) EGR Valve
5) Valve Cover Gaskets
6) Timing belt & water pump
7) Timing cover gaskets (including crank & cam seals)
8) Intake Gaskets
9) Oil pan gasket
10) Valve stem seals on intake & exhaust (& perform valve adjustment procedure)

That's about all I can think of. Any thoughts on anything else I should check or do? Or am I going overboard? LOL The car has 132k on it & I'm sure the motor is all original. No idea on maintenance history but I would assume the worst; it runs like shit.

Thanks for your help!

plugs and wires are a good start
you could probably get away with just cleaning the maf(thats probably why it runs like it does), and the dpfe
the intake gasket is suppose to be a lifetime gasket, but if ya wanna replace it then go for it

no you arent going overboard
if you dont know of the maintenance history, its just a good idea to give her a 60k
your SHO will thank ya later

hey, if ya need any help let me know.
i am from Fertile and would be willing to lend ya a hand if u need

I'd replace the rod bearings, too. The set, including oil pan gaskets, RTV, gasket for the oil strainer and some plastigage is only ~ $70 from RCM. :thumb:
Maybe crank sensor might be a good idea (since you're in there anyhow), and eventually cam sensor.

DEFINITELY add front main seal, rear main seal (will also require carrier seal), crank position sensor (CPS), cam position sensor (CID), and rod bearings to the list. Honestly, while in there I personally would do the main bearings too, just so you never have to touch them..... but then you get tempted to do piston rings and such once you go that far and it becomes a $2k project once you're done.

Knock sensor is something I'd recommend because it's a pain to get to if it ever fails later down the road. Mark @ RCM and Josh @ SHOnut have always taken awesome care of me when I bought from them.... from my first purchase all the way through my last. Can't go wrong with those guys for sure. I'm not familiar with the newer SHO vendors these days, but I'm sure there are good guys out there.

But as far as gaskets go, I would just jump on RCM Automotive's site and purchase a "3.2 upper gasket set" and "standard 3.0-3.2 lower gasket set". It'll be a few hundred dollars in gasket/seals, so don't be surprised.... you can't get this stuff cheap. But those gasket sets will pretty much give you everything you'll need, plus some more than you can choose to use that may not necessarily need (fuel injector seals, throttle body gasket, etc.) but I'd use them all just so that everything is fresh. I think RCM sells pretty much all of the sensors too, so you should be able to pretty much make it a one-stop shop.

Everything else that you're already looking at is pretty much spot-on and stuff I would definitely take care of. But try with the MAF cleaner as yzstud said-- that may be all that you need. Hope all of that helps.... and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!
