You may have to remove the y-pipe to get at the rear bolt on the pump, access it from laying underneath...I just did this to my '93 which was an atx, now mtx, and with the pipe off it's very easy to access. I can't remember how much the atx trans interferes though...

I used a 1/4" rachet and whatever size socket it was and reaced behind the manifold. There were some parts that needed to be moved to the side I believe, but it wasn't that hard once I got in the correct position.

From what I remember, I removed the main vacuum hose on the back of the manifold, the rear manifold bracket so I could remove the wiring brace deal and move the wires aside, and the ECC and ABS connectors with the black plastic cover on the firewall. I think that's all of it and it allowed me to get in there without hand/wrist cramps.

For the line going to the pump.....oh man! :oogle: I tried to get that thing off with the correct size wrench and it wouldn't budge. I even used a pipe over the wrench for extra leverage and it wouldn't do anything but begin to strip. Since I was pulling it from a parts car, I chopped the metal hose and took the rest off with a deep socket and impact.

The ATX pump is far easier to remove than the MTX due to the engine being farther forward. GoofSHO swapped mine out in about an hour.

Just unplug it and remove the two 5.5mm bolts and it will come off. Repeat to install. It is nonadjustable, so you won't screw anything up.

I just did this on my MTX a few weeks ago...what a pain in the @$$....you gotta take the wheel off, the splash shield out, AND the rear motor mount...I fumbled around for a day trying to avoid taking the motor mount out, but I couldn't find a way around it.

BTW, I found the long hose from the resivoir to the cooler all sort of brittle and torn from being routed past the exhaust manifold; it's a good time to check it while you're under.

Its very easy to do, just a little tight. Jack the car up on jack stands and remove the paa side tire. from there you can get to the steel line that screws into the side facing the firewall. There is a bolt on the back that you will need to remove from the back while your there. After you have that removed pop the hood and remove the remote fluid resivor. You will need a catch pan. Loosen the P/S pully nut. Remove the belt and pully. No need for a pully puller as will will come right off after you remove the nut. There is 3 bolts on the front side, remove them and it is out. I just did it about 3 weeks ago and took about 2 hours with a few cursing breaks in there as well.

Good Luck.

I don't know if it's the same, easier, or harder, but heres what i did for my 94 MTX:

1. take out battery, loosen resivoir and reposition it, remove engine damper
2. remove wheel/shield
3. loosen pully nut, loosen tensioner, remove belt, remove pully
4. remove big-@$$ nut holding the motor mount (22mm?)
5. Jack up the engine (with a board under the oil pan) about an inch higher than normal
6. remove the bolts holding the motor mount to the block (you may need to adjust the hieght of the engine to release some of the pull)
7. jack up the engine till you can get the mount out
8. take out the rear bolts on the pump, and the three front ones, wiggle the pump out through the bottom

Again, ATX's are supposed to be easier, but who knows

Sorry to make you go through all of that and have it not work. It was cool chatting w/ you guys though.

If I can get the pump off in a motel parking lot with minimal tools, 1600 miles from home, and without removing the motor mount, then it you should be able to get it out no problem. (pully splines stripped and shreaded the belt on my way back from the convention)

It's no problem! If anything, I learned to start with the metal line first and if it doesn't come off, then I wont mess with anything else. :) My next job is the power steering rack on the 92.
