I recently purchased a 92' MTX. Whenever I turn the wheel at a standstill, it will turn about half a rotation before the steering will die and the pump will stop spinning (loud whine heard from under the hood). The steering seems to work fine while rolling and revving the engine at a standstill doesn't help. Is this a loose belt or a failing pump? Thanks.

If the actual pulley is stopping when the motor is running you definately have a bad pump!

I just cured a similar problem in my 89 SHO. It would shriek when I cranked the wheel going slow and sometimes I would lose all power assist. But it was fine if I was up to speed.

It turned out my belt was waaaayyy to loose. I turned up the tension by twisting the hex head tensioner screw and the problem went away.
