Power loss in engine while driving fallowed by check engine light

Feel's as if it's not running on all cylinders but only when that feeling happens and the light comes on otherwise it feels good at all other times.. Could somethin be shutting off the spark to one of the cylinder's? anyone have this problem or know how to narrow it down? Thanks
