Yes. real time data and getting to see extended logging is usually more available on very expensive scan equip. Some DIY stuff comes close, but the data fragments that you can save and look at are much shorter time intervals. If you have ruled out alot of stuff and still scratching your head it can be worth it.

Checked trans fluid today. It was not showing on the stick. Decided to perform a drain & fill. Drained right at 4 qts. out of it. It was a fairly dark red but did not smell burnt. Put in 4 new qts. & took it for a short drive, approx. 5 mi. I'm delighted to report there was NO sensation of surging nor missing between 1K and 2K rpm during this drive! Returned home, rechecked level. Added about 2/3 of a quart to get it to the correct level. I'm hopeful this cured the problem. If so I suppose either the low fluid level or the fluid condition, or both, was the problem. I'lll do another drain and fill soon.
BTW picked up this container at WM. Perfect for this job with the wide mouth lid, pour spout, and quart graduation markings.
Many thanks to those who suggested it could be the tranny. Would not have thought that was the problem.

Just read through this. I thought torque converter too. I was under warrantee and had to take the mechanic for a ride to replicate the issue. Traveling around 50mph let off the gas then get back in with medium acceleration and the RPM’s would just bounce. They replaced the TC right at 60K.

Ran some errands in the car today, about 19 mi. NO sign of shudder or miss. Tach needle completely stable. I'm a happy camper.

Add the rest of the quart you have. Then do the 5 in and 5 out every other oil change. Our transmissions do not like dirty fluid.

Level was correct when I checked it after adding the approx. 2/3 qt.

There both right, I add one extra quart to tranny. Helps control loss of fluid to valve body when getting sloshed back from hard acceleration. I've ran extra quart for awhile, no issues at all.
