My '98 SHO makes a popping noise from the front when I take off from a stop and need advice. I do know that one of the wheel bearings is bad because it makes a noise from about 30mph on up and wonder if this could also be the culprit of the popping noise. Thanks.

Would SFBs also make popping sounds while going around turns?

He described it as a singel pop when stopping or starting. That' what mine did. Mine also popped when making tight turns. If it were the sway bar bushings there would be multiple clunking noises. The single clunk is the subframe shifting, I think.

It is multiple klunking noises, most noticiably on the driver side, underneath the car. I was thinking tie rods before as my steering has gotten sloppy since my accident, now I don't know what to think. Do tie rods klunk around turns? My wheel doesn't shake at all, it's just that the steering is sloppy. What do you think?

I have the same problem and ford replaced the inner and outer tie rods and i still get the clunking/popping sound. I am thinking about going into ford and asking them if they will buy and install the ASB's and charge my warranty the price, if not i am thinking that i'll have them install the OEM ones then pull them off and put the Aluminum ones in and sell the OEM on ebay or the like.

I have a popping noise in my car too...I just had the ball joints done and I replaced the swaybar links so you can rule those out.

Sounds like the subframe mounts to me. We've actually come out with an inexpensive fix. (Yeah, I said inexpensive)

The mounts are two separate pieces and held together with the bolt. After a period of time, they tend to compress and wear a little. This allows the subframe to slip just a little in the mount. This is what is causing the pop. You'll feel it under your left foot (or in the passenger's foot well) when changing directions or turning.

We've come up with a shim and a proceedure that fixes the problem for good. The shim adds clamping force to the bushing and the proceedure lets you fix the problem where it starts. It's not a performance upgrade like my Original Aluminum Subframe Bushings, but it will fix the problem.

Shim kits are $15 and come with instructions and picuters.

Drop us a line if you're interested.

97 V8 popping

I'm interested in the fix you described involving shims and the SFB's. Could you please send some information?

Thanks.

Is yours clunking or do you have a popping noise? I have both and my shop thinks the rack is the clunking and not sure about the popping. I have a spare rack but labor is 6 hrs w/front end alignment @ $70/per. I don't want to invest $400 and still have clunking so I may just live with that for now. The popping is the most annoying so I'm going after that as first priority. Thanks again for the bearings tip, worked like a champ for my humming sound @ 60 - 70 mph.

I am down to only the sway bar bushings having dried out a bit and gotten squeaky on bumps at low speeds, for suspension noises. I might replace them, or just shoot in some teflon spray again the next time I her.
