I periodiacially (more often than not) get a bad wiff of gas inside the car when I come to a stop eg. stoplight, stuck in traffic etc.
I changed the gas-fume purge valve and charcoal canister per the SHOtimes FAQ but still the gas smell....Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

In the vacuum line near the purge solenoid there is a what appears to be a small plastic in-line connector. It is actually a restrictor, the hole inside it is less that 1/16". It's purpose is to restrict the amount of engine vacuum applied to the vapor line going back to the tank, thus preventing excess vacuum from collapsing the tank. If that restrictor is plugged the gas tank will pressurize and you can get lots of fumes venting from the gas cap. If the fumes are from under the hood, look for a leak on the fuel rails. I had the valve in the test port go bad and leak.

Have you had your fuel pump replaced recently? Its possible that the connection for the charcol canister was not installed properly. However, the likelihood is slim; it was just an idea.

Another thing; are you blowing unburnt gas out of your exhaust? (check it at idle or have someone open the throttle with the car in neutral and check your exhaust) This would indicate that you are running way rich. A car that's running rich with no cats will stink. Don't ask why I know

Where is this restrictor? I have been having gas fume problems for a while and I just figured it was the vent on top of the gas tank leaking. I looked near my CANP solenoid and couldn't find the restrictor you were talking about. Is it inside the line or is it visible outside it?

Thanks,

One thing to check: make sure you don't have a leak at the fuel rails under the intake runners. My rail crossover / schrader valve leaked a smudge & I could smell it in the car (especially with the heater on). Check the fuel pressure regulator on the passenger side of the rail as well.
