Hello all -

I just bought some Pilot Foglights, hoping to direct install them, but I'm having trouble with the wiring. They're standard 12v, 55W lights with a white power and black ground wire. I thought that I could just splice them into the existing wiring and be good to go, but they won't turn on. Do I need to wire both lights for them to work? I've tried lots of combinations to try to get them to work, and nothing seems to do it. I can do some rewiring if necessary, but mainly I'd like to use the stock switch. The lights came with a standard rocker switch for power, but it's UGLY. Can I use their wiring with the existing switch (assuming they won't splice in?)? Any help would be appreciated, since I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to electronics (the lights do work though when connected directly to the battery...)

*EDIT* - It might help to mention that it's for a 93 ATX. Why is there an extra pigtail between the original lamp and the harness?

Get a 12V automotive relay and a relay socket and hook them up that way. This will increase the voltage to the lamps and make the brighter. Here is a good resource:

Theres a link on that page to a place called SUV lights and they have wiring harnesses with relays in them already. If you want to make your own (like I did) I can probably make up some instructions or point you to them.

The foglights should have came with a complete wiring harness (along with the relay). The lights need the relay. However when i had my SHO i direct hooked them up from the stock wires and they worked.

Ok....did some more research. I guess Pilot changed the part number for my lights, which are considered driving lights, and not fog lights. Here's a link...

http://www.pilotautomotive.com/pilot2ai8.htm

My harness doesn't have a relay...just a 3 wire rocker switch (red power w/inline fuse, white power to the lights, and black to power the light in the switch), which goes to the two wire lights (white power, black ground) that are wired in series. A relay sounds like a good idea in order to get more voltage to the lights, but my main concern is not having to use this horrifically ugly switch...

I'm not opposed to some rewiring (in fact, I'd rather have my driving lights independant from my headlights)...how can I manage to still use the factory fog light switch? Any ideas on which poles on the switch should be hot, ground, etc? I'd like the switch to still light, as well...

Peace - Justin

I just cut off the stock fog lights and connected the black and white wires to the stock wiring for my Optronics driving lights. Works perfect.

Dunno why...

Do both lights need to be wired at the same time to work to complete a circuit or should they work independently? Why is there an extra pigtail in the stock wiring between the lamp and the other harness? Does anyone know how I could use the stock fog light switch in my relay-rewiring? I'm just shhoting for answers here since I'm semi-inept electronically...

I just spliced my cheapo pilots in, and everything worked great. I'd' say check for a good connection on the pigtail connector, and 12v at the wires, and make sure you have a really good connection. :thumb:
And yes, the lamps work independant of one another.

If you take the light bulb from the stock fog lights and cut the glass portion off leaving 2 metal rods then if you pry the opening on the pilots wire ends opened a bit they will go right over those rods. Then solder it a little and wrap it up with lots and lots of electrical tape and youve got it. No cutting into factory wiring and if worse comes to worse, all uve done is ruin 2 light bulbs. This is how i wired mine up and they work great and are extremely bright. The best thing about it is i didnt mess with the stock wiring and they still unplug just like the factory ones. :thumb:
