Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes... just testing the waters here...

How about a meet-up for us SHO owners in the general Pittsburgh area?

I was posting a bit ago with 2001TAURUSSEL about such a possibility. So far, I only know of Pittsburgh SHO owners in Allegheny, Washington, and Beaver counties. However, if you're within 2 hours of Pittsburgh (or would drive longer), I'd certainly want to open it to all. The more people that came, the bigger the event we could do, and the more fun we could (afford to) have, such as renting a track for an afternoon!

In fact, I just got off the phone with the salesperson at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex, just to feel them out. Their are different possible rental options for various facility uses, some of which include the use of their amazing North Track :dribble:. (It's pretty awesome... check out their track here on Google maps.) Fees can be expected to be $1500 to $5000 (in total, not per person!), depending on a wide variety of factors, whether just an Autocross meet, a PDE event (performance driving class), or a dinner with spirited "parade laps" around the North track. Lots of options there. If we had a $3000 event and had 100 people come, it'd be only $30 a head! If it were only 10 people and wanted the most basic package they can offer, even that might be pushing it a bit at $150 a head. Personally, I'd like to keep it under $100 per person if possible, for renting a facility to have some fun with our cars. (Unless it were PDE, those classes are actually pre-priced at $185/head, but I hear very good things about them, that they're well worth the money.)

One other option, mentioned by the salesperson at PittRace, is to leverage the relationship they have with the AGP, the organization that runs the Flashlight Drags, is to have AGP do an FLD day for us. I'd have to contact them to make the arrangements... and I was thinking it could be fun to do a knockout style old-school drag race, especially if we have a smaller number of people.

Just brainstorming really, but yet another option would be a BYOC type LAN party, involving racing games, if that'd be of interest to anyone. I should have facilities for up to 12 by the first of the year (if not sooner), but larger groups can be accommodated by renting any meeting place with decent power.

Or... it could be far simpler. Just meet up at a Starbuck's with a decent parking lot (or whatever), somewhere in the middle of all attendees, and just hang out for a bit, check out our various rides, like a mini car show. And coffee. ;)

So, "go all out", "just hang out", or anything in between... it's all good with me... just give it some thought as to what appeals to you.

SOOOO.... if you live anywhere near Pittsburgh (or are willing to drive it) and would like to participate in such a meetup... please respond to the thread, and we'll try to get this thing planned. Include what types of activities would interest you in your post, in order of preference, as well as the most you'd want to spend on an event, if anything at all. (Or PM me if you don't want to post $$$ stuff.)

I actually had no dates in mind in particular whatsoever. This is pretty much an exploratory thread. Trying to gauge interest and collect ideas, which could certainly include dates. :)

I was watching a segment on Motorweek recently about Literally Cars and Coffee....Basically Saturday AM meets in shopping centers, in by 8 out by 10 to noonish... I am sure we could find a centrally located area to start with.

We used to meet in the King of Prussia area at the local ******* in late Jan, but have stopped. Would like to get something like that back. I'm about 3-4 hours from Pittsburg, but would try to make it out. Sat work better for me, cause I work night shift and Sunday's are mostly out for me. Glad someone wants to get meets up again. :thankyou:

Sounds good guys... also wondering if shouldn't post this into some of the Gen1/Gen2 forums... at least link into this thread.

Bam - yeah, King of Prussia is CLEAR across the state, lol. However, if you couldn't make it, it's possible I could come to a separate meet somewhere out there, depending on the time/date. We have family in the Harrisburg/Hershey/Lebanon areas, so we're out there several times a year anyhow.

Not a bad idea, looks like there are more SHO's guys in your area, so I would try to keep it somewhere near you. I can travel, but in the next couple weeks, I'm putting the SHO away for the winter.

I posted a referencing link in the open forums area... didn't see a really compatible Gen1/2 forum. They don't seem to have a "General Discussion" area, unless I'm missing something, lol.

When you put the SHO away for the winter, (a) do you run it periodically just to keep everything well lubricated, and (b) what the heck do you drive? I always imagined the SHO would be a great DD for the snow, given the AWD.

I may uncover it on a nice day to drive it, but not real worried about it. I have full syn oil in the motor. I have an 2002 FORD Explorer to run in the winter. Yeah I know they have AWD, but its more the other idiots on the road. I've parked my last 2 Gen3's for the winter, never had any issues either. I do use Stalbil in the gas for storage cause of the ethanol.

Yeah, I live in an area with horrible drivers as well. On the bright side, I've become a very safe and decent defensive driver. We'll see how this winter goes. I'd not be opposed to a winter jalopy if I had to.

I could most likely make a Sat gig as long I have about 4 weeks notice. Don't think would come in winter.

A point was brought up about winter coming. Granted. I'm going to suggest that we do something smaller more like what 2011TAURUSEL was suggesting, like "Cars and Coffee". (There's actually a group that does that in Pittsburgh, but their "season" is over now) So, smaller for now, maybe we can figure out some ways at such a meetup, and also over the winter, to get a lot of people involved to make a SHO track day at PittRace a reality. I'd really like to make that happen - you guys will freakin' love that place.

I would definitely be interested in a meet. Especially if it's at PIRC.

Awesome! I see you're local. Have you been to PittRace before? Even if this event/meetup doesn't happen (I'm sure it will in one form or another, some good responses so far), Flashlight Drags leaves their home tarmac at Green County airport and comes to PIRC once or twice per season now. It's crazy fun doing the 1/8th mile, old school style... and then you get to run the North Track with well over a hundred other cars... over and over and over, for HOURS. All for $30 bucks. There's also a bit of an informal car show too. I did it for the first time (my first event actually) a few weeks back, which I told the story about right here, if interested. It was one of the best times of my life. Anyhow, definitely sign up for Flashlight Drags email list for updates. Awesome stuff.

Yeah little bit haha. I've been to Beaverun before but I was never on the track before. So they just let anyone who entered for the flashlight drags run the north track also? Am I understanding that right?

Yep! And it was more awesome than I imagined. Just such a rush. The north track was just phenomenal

I should also clarify that the Flashlight Drags at PittRace (aka BeaverRun) were actually at the north track. The 1/8 mile was set up on the straightaway going towards the press box/banquet hall. So, if you ran the race, you kinda HAD to run the track to either exit it (or, line up again for another run... which was my choice.. repeatedly hahaha.)

Ohhhh ok, that makes a lot more sense. So it's not actually a full lap, more like a teaser. I was seriously thinking about doing the last PDE of the season but unfortunately I was too late to register. I would be very interested in a PDE type of meet/event before the weather turns if there is enough interest.
