I have 2 sets of slicers. I have filled body lettering with reflective white decal tape. (looks way cool a night when lights hit the car) In the day time it looks plain white. Any who....
I would like to paint a set of my wheels white.
Now I know how to paint the wheels. (My Dad had a body shop for 10 years were I worked my ass off) He works for an Insurance company now... But we still have all the tools, spray booth, etc.
One set has more fade to the paint than the other. They will be the set I paint. My question is:
I found that one place were the tire boys put there balance weight on... the paint is peeled away. It looks like the paint is either really think. Or that it is really some type of polyurthane (sp) coating that the wheels are dip or sprayed with.
So! Prior to sanding, sealing and painting the wheels...
Can anyone tell me what the product is that is on the wheels?
If not I will do some testing... to see what product will best stick to the wheels. I have lots of different types of primers and sealers to use... They will work on everything from inside plastic parts to the bumpers... I would like to use what will last the longest.
Chances are I will Bake on a polyurethane paint with a flexable parts additive to help with chipping and when the tire boys put on the balancing weights.
I had someone tell me to look into Powder coating them. But that would cost some cash! This will cost me next to zip!

Any Thoughts would be great.
OR BETTER YET!
Anyone have some white slicers they want to trade for silver?
he he

I would get them powdercoated. There is a powder coating place a couple housed up from me and they will powdercoat my slicers for $10/each as long as they are already stripped.

Thats cheap.
I know of a few places here in my town that do powder coating. I will check with them.

What metal are the wheels made of? I know stupid question.... But I really don't recall ever reading about them...

The only downside to the place is that they can only powdercoat it in 5 different colors. I forget what the choices are.

where abouts in Rochester? I'm looking for agood place to powdercoat my Koning Monsoons that I have, but have yet to find a place that I can afford. I'm in the Albany, NY area, but would love to take a drive to get a deal like that for my rims.

I painted these to see how i liked the look before i went thru the trouble of stripping and powdercoating them. That was over a year ago,and the paint holds up beautifully. There is not a single chip in the paint that i can see.Coating is of course nice, but not necessary. Also, with a little Aircraft Stripper the original paint comes right off,so i don`t think they are powdercoated.

The paint looks great after a year! What did you do with the wheels after the stripper? What type of prep. work did you do? What type of paint did you use?
thanks

In that picture it`s just enamel in a can(4 coats) with about 3 coats on clear. If you wet sand it and do the job properly, there`s no reason it shouldn`t come out nice.If that paint holds up,imagine what you can do.This winter they are getting srtipped again(it was only temporary)to be shot in black next spring.I`m trying to decide between gloss black, flat black,or metal flake black.Fwiw,if you look at the front rim, you`ll see that the edge is polished. All four are like that now,and i hate it.All black is the way to go!

The powdercoating facility is called Finish Line Powdercoating or maybe just Finish Line and it is in LeRoy, NY which has a zip code of 14482.

best to use Dupont epoxy primer, then Imron over that, with a few coats of Imron clear. Can't be beat, won't chip, won't discolor. Easy to apply, but do it with lots of ventilation! I even painted an engine with Imron, later it was hot tanked, all it did was clean the paint! The shop called me to ask what kind of paint could survive hot tanking in solvents!! Great car paint, too, but kinda expensive. Usually used for aircraft and those super expensive trucks that are customized and some custom cars. Stuff last eons! Check it out, do some research. I used the Imron clear on my mag wheels back in 1982 on my custom 1970 Ford supervan, still looks great, no yellowing (has lots of ultraviolet inhibitors) no chipping, its tough stuff! I even used the clear as a varnish on my kitchen oak woodwork because the sun would fade the stain; the UV inhibitors keep the stain from fading and I can set plant pots on the woodwork without worrying! Not cheap,, but you do get what you pay for. Very versatile and easy to apply, resists sagging, etc.
