I forget if the suggested weight is 10w30 or 5w30, but it would be best to stick with the one in the manual. Others may suggest particular favorites, but I would think that you would be fine with any high quality oil and filter, provided you continue to change them both at a short interval like that.

My owners book says 6.5 quarts of 5w30. I would think it would be the same for all years of V8 SHOs?

Yes, the engine requires 6.5 qts of 5w-30 oil. MY preference is Mobil 1 and after opening up the motor to weld the cams, the oil has kept the insides very clean do to the detergents in Mobil 1.

I ue 7 quarts of Amsoil 5w30 and the K&N HP-3001 filter. If you use the bigger filter you get more filtering media, more oil capacity and a higher flow before the bypass valve opens.

I doubt if synthetic will make the seals leak. It will leak out of an alredy bad seal faster.

On your '91 get two 3/8" vacuum plugs and plug the line that goes from the valve cover to the front side and to the rear of the TB. This will put a slight vacuum on the crankcase and slow or stop the seals from leaking.

Mobil 1 5/30w. You'll use about 6quarts. You can't beat Walmart's price of $31.00 for synthetic oil change and 18 point check-up. You'll get hit for the extra quart but you'll drive out for under $40.00. They use Fram oil filters. I change between 3000-5000. Depends on how and where I was driving her.

Regular Valvaline 10w-40 and K&N oil filter which comes out to 7 quarts. I used the same oil in a 94 3.0 GL and when I had to open it up because of my stupid mistake  it was so clean I couldn't believe it. It had about 180,000 at the time. That was changing it every 3,000 :)

Do not use 5-20 oil in V8 SHO engines! It it not recommended according to a Ford TSB. I believe I read that on v8sho.com

SHOZ123,

Why do you say Fram are the pits???

That's what I use and haven't seen a problem yet. Is there something that I should know about?

What's your insider info?

They use a cardboard flap for the pressure relief valve. Go Here to read about oil filters. Bob is the oil guy

From all the tests done that I have read. Mobil 1 and K&N filters are tied for number 1. They are more money but you get what you pay for! I use K&N by the way.

The Mobil 1 filters better, K&N flows better. If you want a cheaper filter Bosch, if you want even cheaper Wal-Mart Super Tech. All made by Champion Labs.

What about motorcraft?
I use 5w30 mobile 1, fl 400s motorcraft.

SHOZ123, or anyone:
I use a bigger filter for my 90, motorcraft FL 1A. Could I use that in my Gen III?
Both of the cars call for the FL 400s, but since I use a bigger filter for the V6, could I do the same with my v8?

Mike
