My 93 atx was run for the first 50K mi on Mobile one...according to the first owner and the second owener claims that it was using synthetic sometimes and sometimes it was using regular oil. I've read your post about how bad synthetic is and I changed from mobile 1 to castrol gtx 10w-30 yesterday with the MC fl400s filter. The car runs good and it has 140K on the clock. but since I put the castrol in the car it has a mild ticking noise at idle comming from the drivers side of the engine. It almost sounds like a fuel injector but its only audible at idle once the car warms up...any suggestions? I already did a 60K......thank for your help guys.....merry christmas....

Was the valve shimming done at 120k??

BTW - I think there is a 50/50 split on the synthetic versus conventional oil controversy that has been plauging the board as of late.

This site has some good reading http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

thanks for the quick reply...the shims were changed at 130k by my local sho shop in NJ which is on the SHO SHOP hall OF Fame. so I think it was a decent job but the engine sounded noisier after I had the valves adjusted than before. I hope they didn't screw up.

The noise is not a good sign of proper valve gapping. After paying the big bucks for my purchasing Ford dealer to do that valve gapping service on my 1989 SHO, the engine sounded like a worn out sewing machine. That was the reason I bought the tools and learned to do the 60K work myself.

I really can't stand this noise. Its not loud when your under the hood but standing next to the car it is definately there. Do you guys think anythings about to let go? It only clicks at idle...any other speed and it sounds normal

thanks.

Im sorry to say but when it comes
to getting good work done, its damned
near impossible to find someone to do
the right job, Im sure that your engine
wasnt serviced properly, if you say its
noticably louder than before,
to own a SHO you need to learn to work
on them, simply put you will do a better
job to your own car than somone that works
on them all day for $$$.
SHO is a personal car and needs TLC
I know Im not offering any help here,
I just know of the problem with lousy
people taking money foy shady work,
I could add this though, its cheaper
to teach yourself to do it right than
paying a stranger to do it for you,

as far as oil goes X-15 know his stuff
on the matter, he says synthetic is noisier than
castrol, do you agree?

It sounds like you have a similar noise to one that mine has. I was wondering if it may be the timing chain at the rear of the cylinder head being a little slack. Has anyone ever run accross problems with the tensioner that would cause such a problem? Mine has made the noise ever since I bought the car with 85k and I have drivin quite aggressively. So far I havent heard it get any worse so it hasn't bothered me that much. I have never had the v/c's off to look inside.

sorry I haven't replied much lately. I was out of town for x-mas. Anyway, my noise hasn't gotten and worse. Its just noticably there and I wish it wasn't. I also noticed that if I have my sho in park, and punch the throttle to the floor but immediatly let off, like a really hard and fast tap on the gas pedal, there is an obnoxious CLACK heard from the back valve cover i think...any Ideas about this? Thanks u guys are the best...

Jon

P.S. i do think synthetic is noisier.
