Odometer stops working

Hi guys,

My odometer doesn't work anymore since a couple of weeks. I found some infos on how to repair a conventionnal one but on a Gen 3 SHO, we dont have a vehicule speed sensor (VSS) and I'm wondering if the whole thing is completely different. Here id my links with some infos. Also, I'm not able to find photo of an unbolted cluster to have a better idea of the work to do.

The guy explain that if only the odometer stop working, the VSS isn't broken but is the white plastic gears behind the cluster that are broken.

Odometer Change

Strong chance I will have to change my gauge cluster in my 90 SHO. If I want my odometer reading to stay the same, is it easier to swap out the odometer or change the reading in the replacement cluster? Is there anything to be careful about if I change the reading, as I would like it to work...

Soneone already change this part/gears on a Gen 3 ? Maybe it's the same on all gens but I prefer to know before unbolting.

The odometer on a Gen3 works just as the video shows. The disassembly is similar to the procedure shown for the Mustang. As there is no official Ford procedure for this repair, you are on your own as to figuring it out.

The repair on the Taurus appears to only replace the drive gear on the motor. I don't know if the larger gear, in the 2 piece kit, is used to drive the odometer.



Here are the instructions for getting everything apart:

Those instructions seem almost too simple. I thought it was a 2 hour process to remove the instrument cluster. The radio bezel, and the panel light cover on the left had to come out. Then there was a cable that shows which gear you are in that also needs to be removed. Let us know how it goes.

Instructions are for a SHO with floor shift. Column shift is more involved.

The part that I'm worried about is in the explications of Irish Pride. There is also the speedometer and his needle that must be unpluged to retreive the cluster but during reassembly, you have to be very careful to put the needle in the right position. If not, your speed wil not be ok...

Thanks Texas Marauder for the parts numbers. The part in the 2 kits are différents, one of the worm screw is shorter (924-388 for Mustang is 0.53 inch vs 0.6 inch for 926-321 for the Taurus). The 2 have the same diameter tought (0.27 inch). Watching at these photos (Mustang parts IIRC), I don't understand why Tauruses will not have the second gear. The principle will be the same normally. I'm wondering if I can put the mustang one which is a lot cheaper (15$ vs 50$)...

It looks like you may be able to get the motor out without removing the indicator needle and gauge face.

Thanks again Texas Marauder. I also found this video but the guy retreive the needle in the process... but you're right, we only need to retreive the small motor (from the back) to replace the gear ! It's almost all the time the worm gear that will broke which tighted to the motor. Good.

Note that he is fitting the Mustang part (shorter one) which has another part number that will also fit there (CC05-02).

It's been 20 years or so since I changed one. I remember thinking the original gear seemed to made of hard rubber. It was strange how the gear crumbled.
