O/D and how it works...

I'm just wondering about O/D. I don't know how to turn it off, or back on for that matter. I don't even know the benefits of having it off. Please explain this,

There is a button on the shifter that allows you to turn the Overdrive on or off.

The benefits would be that if you were pulling something you could switch it off so that the tranny would stay in a lower gear. The owner's manual also says that you can shift yourself with the overdrive off, I guess that is about as close as we get to a manual tranny.

Anyway... You said that the manual states you can shift yourself. So, do you just put it in 1, shift to 2, then to D? If anyone knows how to properly do this, that'd be great.

Also, is it any harm to the tranny? And does it provide any advantage in speed?

I think one of the better uses for turning O/D off is when you're accelerating past 100mph. In my car if I just leave the shifter in D the car will shift from 3rd to 4th at about 105mph. 3rd gear redline is at about 135mph, so keeping the revs up when you're going that fast definitely gives you a performance advantage.

And, yes, if you wanted to manually shift all 4 gears the sequence would be:
Turn O/D off, shift to '1' then to '2' then to 'D' then turn O/D on.

Stupid mid-year 99s. headbang I don't have an O/D button. My gear sequence is:

P R N O/D D 1

So I could not manually shift it. I could only tell it when to get out of first. I could not tell it when to get out of second. I don't have a 2 selection.

This, of course, begs the question - is shifting "manually" in an automatic any worse for the transmission than letting it decide by itself? After all, the transmission still takes care of the actual shifting - it just changes when YOU tell it to instead.

Could be fun... Just have to remember to avoid "R" wink

If you don't have the OD button then shift down to first after you have gone to second. This will hold it in second.

Alright. So, If I'm going to try out shifting manually, I want to make sure I do it right.

What RPMs or MPH should I shift at? What do I redline at? Do I take my foot off the gas while shifting or not? Any further suggestions? Thanks.
