What can cause a torque converter not to lock up? My car use to run at 2k rpms @ 60mph and now it's around 2.5k. 70mph @ 2.5k is now just under 3k and 80mph @ just under 3k is right at 3k. What could cause it not to lock up. It goes into over drive on the highway just fine but never seems to drop the lil 500rpms down into lockup. Doesn't matter how long you drive it (3 hour drive up north didn't do it).

Sounds like the TC clutch or clutch solenoid. Might just be a loose wire or connector. Otherwise it's take the TC out and rebuild it.

This will increase the tranny fluid temp considerably too.

Isn't there some clip that breaks not allowing the TC to lock up?

if there are no electrical codes for the Torque Converter solenoid which could prove an electrical fault with a component or a wire if you track it down good.

However you are more then likely looking at a rebuild with a new torque conveter, especially if you ran it on 3 hour trips without lockup

The TC's don't lock up if it is too cold outside. Usually once they warm up, you can shut the car down and turn it back on and it will lock up. Also, usually once the fluid gets hot enough it will lock itself up. That might be the case here, or you might have an issue beyond that.

you could ck if its lockedup while driving keep you right foot on the gas at cruise at aconstant speed above 45mph. then lightly touch the brake pedal, this should produce arpm increase and unlock the convertor. but wont work it the tranny is cold.

The converter was rebuilt just over a year ago with brazed fins and new parts (clutch, etc). I noticed the change then but they test drove it and said nothing was wrong. It was all rebuilt by TSI which is a national shop chain. They did amazing work on the transmission itself.

That clip only has to do with fourth gear. This problem is about a TC. If your TC is unlocked you can still shift in and out of 4th gear with the OD button. That clip does not affect the TC locking or unlocking.
