I just noticed my shifter can be taken out of park without using the brake pedal. This only happens when it is running. If the engine is off, then the shifter is locked into Park. Any ideas? Also, I do have brake lights.

I am also hearing some hissing coming from the valve that sticks against the brake pedal. I dont believe this to be normal.

try plulling up on the brake pedal and see if the shifter moves...

i dont think you should be able to move the shifter with the car off... do you mean with the car off and the key in the ON position?

theres a cable running right from the shifter to the pedal and it will still shift if something goes wrong with the cable there is no other safty precautions.

as for it not shifting when its off maybe its something weird like the brake pedal when the car is running depresses itself a slight bit and the cable olny needs a slight bit to engage the park lock?

Yeah I am not really sure. It worked a while back. The only thing I see down there is the brake on/off switch and the vacuum valve. Not really sure what that does either. I do know it leaks horribly when pressing on the pedal.

Not sure about the Taurus, but on my mom's old '93 cougar, the switch attached to the pedal for the brake lights, also controls the shift interlock. Maybe one of the wires has a short in it. Also, the hissing sounds like either a vacuum leak or a failing brake booster. The Town & Country I have has a hissing brake pedal too. Does the hissing get quieter the harder you push on the pedal and/or the higher the engine rpm's are?

Sorry I have not replied to this thread. It has been some time since the last posting. I am still dealing with the hissing brake pedal. I have almost no brake pedal left. However I still have my brakes. The pedal drops to the floor completely. If I hit any snow or wet spots and the ABS kicks in, it will force the pedal all the way upward. The hissing sound gets louder as you push on the pedal. When sitting at a light, you can actually hear the engine change rpm's when the hissing is at its loudest. I am looking into replacing the master cylinder but I am also thinking that it could be the brake booster.

But anyway, it sounds like you have a leaky brake booster. Please fix it. It will only get worse.

Sounds like a leaking brake booster to me, too. The idle speed changing when you push on the brake pedal means unfiltered air being drawn into the engine through the booster/vacuum line. The leaking brake booster also means that you are not getting as much boost from the power brakes as you should, which means more brake pressure or longer stopping distances than normal - none of which is a good thing.
