I just bought my new 89 SHO for 1500. The car runs good but when you floor the gas the engine kinda sputters a lil not that much but noticible there are no check engine lights the car idles good just sputters when you try and floor it. Also my mufflers or something in the exhaust is rattling when i start to get past 4k rpm's would new mufflers help this. Thanks for any advice and hope i learn alot more from these forums.

Welcome to the forum Jared. :thumb:

Pull the plug wires and check if the plug wells are full of oil.

Also check out www.shotimes.com under maintenance has some great reading on about everything that goes wrong with the SHO and the remedy.

Good luck with the car.

It's common for the heat shields around the catalytic converters to rattle. Check and see if it's them making the noise.

black with a black spolier on it and mim wheels it looks really nice i just wish it would run like it loooks. Could the vacum lines be causing my problem and anyone have any tips on how i can even get into the rear plug wells my hands are too big:( also the heater coil is out could that be the cause. The person i bought it from said the only thing it does really is just let you have a heater and i don't need one right now lol.

ok after a little gymnastic style i finially got to the back plug wells. Now the wells have maybe like a couple drops of oil in there or maybe just gunk not sure but the back left and back right spark plugs are kinda corroded would this cause the problem?

Yes, if your plugs are corroded that would be a good place to start. You should also run your diagnostic codes to see what your cars computer says is wrong. It could be a vacuum issue, but very unlikely that your heater core unless the coolant is leaking and somehow affecting something else. Does the car act/smell like it's running rich? How is your gas mileage? My guess based on what you've said so far would be O2 sensors and/or ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor. But you really need to start with the codes.

When you get it running good you should come to one of our Puget Sound SHO Club meetings some weekend. Send me an email for more details if interested ([email protected]).

Hey i am installing new o2's but if that doesn't seem to be the problem all well least i KNOW they work now. But if it is the ECT would it cause the engine to run hot cause it is weird when the car is on or on acc the temp gauge goes back down to cool but when the car is off the guage goes up to about maybe the L on the gauge should i replace the ECT too. And how much does that cost and how hard is it to install? Thanks.

Any guage reading observed with the switch in the OFF position should be ignored. It is not relevent.

The perception of a SHO "running too hot" has been discussed many times. The dash guage should not be used to determine if this condition exists, but rather an accurate, external measuring device should be used.
