First the Good News. I finally got it all back together and took the SHO for a ride.The Midwest Stage 1 clutch feels great and the suspension upgrade (Tokicos, Eibachs, TPR bushings, front control arms) along with the reinforced mounts makes it feel like a whole new car. :thumb:

Now the Bad News: I can't get the tranny into reverse! :cry: I have determined that it's not clutch-related at all; it's just as if there is no reverse gear to go into. :shrug: As I said, 1-5 shifts are great, as good as they've ever been since I've had the car. It almost feels like there is some sort of "safety" that is preventing the tranny from being put into reverse (like the one where you can't go from 5th to reverse, for example).

My initial thoughts on the problem:

1. That I might have bent something either inside the shift mechanism or inside the tranny itself when I kind of forced it into gear when the clutch failed (I was on a busy expressway and needed to get it in gear in order to make it to the next exit ramp);

2. That I might have bent something inside the tranny when I was picking it up and putting it down etc. during the clutch job. Although I don't recall any instances where the tranny was treated roughly and could have been damaged, it is kinda awkward to handle, and maybe when I put it down one time it could have pivoted, resulting in too much weight being put on the shifter shaft.

I'm no expert on the MTX, so any feedback on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Only other thing would be check the shifting assembly its self. You may be able to disconnect the shifter from the trans and try to get it in that way. That way you will know if it is possible.

No, I did not crack the tranny open. I thought about it, since it sat on my workbench for 2 weeks and I had ample time while I worked on some other things, but I figured the risk that I might mess something internally up was not worth it, inasmuch as I had no other reason to think there was anything wrong with the tranny. Ironic huh?

The only bolt I removed from the tranny was that lower "interlock" bolt in order to drain the tranny fluid. The car had already been immobilized at that point and I was careful not to move any of the axles and such because I am aware of the warnings about moving things around while that bolt is out. I had previously changed out the fluid using the same method with no problems. Took it out, drained the fluid, put it back in. But I'm still curious, is that bolt somehow related to reverse gear?

My plan at this point is to have someone simulate trying to get it into reverse while I watch underneath, then I'm going to disconnect the shifter from the tranny and see if i can get it into reverse using my hand as the shifter to soo if it goes into reverse at all. Hopefully that way I'll at least be able to discern if it's a shifter issue or a tranny issue.

Also, IIRC, I saw a picture one time of a piece inside an MTX that had gotten bent and was preventing somebody from shifting into one of the gears. It look almost like a guide plate for the tranny shifter lever. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I was thinking that, if it's a tranny issue, then maybe it's something along those lines...?

Thanks folks. Any further comments welcome.

When you say that reverse simply isnt there....

does the shifter move to the location reverse should be? Or does it feel like it is bound up, and somethig will not allow the shifter to get to reverse?

The shifter won't go to the location that reverse should be, it feels like something is preventing it from going there.

"Its got to be internal".
I hope not also. I had the same problem when a shop put my clutch in in nov. 2005
I diconnected the shift linkage from the trans. than manually moved the trans. thru the gears. It went into reverse with linkage disconnected so while I was at it I took the slop out of the shift rod linkage (per info on this site). no sloppy shifter and i have reverse now.
