new car and tranny problem

whats up guys i just got a 1997 sho with 180000 kilometers ,,when i got it the thing was ready to die so many noises and stuff and running very bad ,,so far i changed the imrc box cuz the cable had snapped off ,,i got that off ebay from some guy that has lots of parts ,i also got the crank position sensor ,,the heat guard under the car was stting on the exhaust i got that fixed too ,,and the back brakes where grinding so all fresh now ,and i flushed the power steering and lubed up the joints that stopped all the steering noises and also put a new gas filter ,,now the thing is almost perfect exept the trannny ,,,sometimes when i press gas to leave from a light it seems to drop first gear and go in neutral and the get back in first but it only does it sometimes ,,now the car runs great the tranny fluid looks kinda reddishe brownishh it was low when i got it so i added 1 qts mobil 1 syn ,,n e way i hope its a sensor and not the tranny cuz now it shifts perfecly n e way let me know what u guys think.....i also have this whine that sounds like its from the tranny ?



ive done 3 oil changes since i got it in less that 4000 km becuz when i got it the oil was the worste i ever seen thick and black now it looks so clean i use castrol gtx 10w30


oh yeah maybe i did something bad but i changed 4 spark plugs in the front cuz its a big job to get to the back and im kinda broke and busy lol thanks guys

any help is much appreciated.

do you think i can last ?cuz like i said its seems to run great it just does that on occasions and i also took it to the track and i did 15.8 at 88mph only had the chance to do 1 run

like i said thats problem is very rare and the thing drive beautifully thats why i asked can it be a sensor ,,i dont think transmissions can fix themselves thats why im not sure what to think ....and yes i took it to the track ,,,its an SHO i wanted to see the time it does ,,n e wayy thanks


any other ideas???

What color is this SHO, it's either Silver, Red, or Black. Because I haven't seen too many on the market. Unless you can pull codes if the light flashes and stuff there is only the rebuild advice. Also might have to clean up the carbon deposits inside, that would also be another problem because it sat and it's at 180000km. People ran these to the ground in QC. And the cams are probably not welded, it's also another QC thing, everyone knows about it included the guy driving it, but nothing is ever done.

Drop the transmission pan and change the filter and gasket and if that helps then I would do a complete flush.

change the tranny filter and fluid and add some lucas tranny fix, it will buy you some time, not much, but some time

If topping of the fluid stopped it from dropping out of first gear, then that may be all that was wrong, low fluid level.

A tranny flush and filter change is probably a good idea though.

Where in Quebec are you?

I don't know your exact problem by your description, but I have a 1998(That got rear ended by a bus last week--GRRRR) and the transmission had a whine upon start up; that gradually went away after it warmed up.

At first I though it was the transmission pump, but it turned out to be the torque converter.
I bought a rebuilt transmission, with a new torque converter, $1650, and had a Transgo shift kit put in $269.

My advice would be to take it easy on the racing, and start saving.

i will try to drop pan and filter and see if that helps il put a bottle of lucas and hope for the best ,,,and who is gonna rebuild my tranny ,,any good shops around im from montreal quebec ...

oh yeah and its the silver one.

Ok, so there were two on the market in the past 6 months. One in mirabel or one on the south shore. For either 1500 or 1000(nego) in their respective order. Been scanning the market lately.

Lucas in the tranny, usually not the best, either an extreme last resort or a death wish of sloshy goodness.

Do you have any other problems with the car? unrelated or related.

FWIW, before I had to have my tranny rebuilt it was acting up. Slipping, leaking and erratic shifting. I added lucas tranny magic (two bottles). I knew it was a band-aide repair but I managed 5K more miles before the transmission went south.
In my situation I think it was worth the $20 bucks for a very nice 5k more miles of driving.

The real question is, did you pay 1500?

Also, did you know about the tranny before you bought it?

Looks tempting, but I have seen my fair share of Gen 3's. All of them have no tranny's anymore, or rear fenders

no i paid 950 for it but i dumped about 600 or more on it and tranny was great and is still perfect,, it shifts at right times and no hard shifting just that 4 times that it did that thing were it just goes outta gear and jumps to 6000 rpm and then when it come back down to about 2000 rpm it grabs the gear and i can drive,,, happend 4 times thats all ,,,im scared to drive now with all this rebuild talk but the thing moves well ,,oh yeah it was cold when it did that if that metters ??

With those symptoms it's definitely a ticking time bomb. The tranny will go out, but the only question is when.

There's only 2 ways out, fix the problem or part it out. Is that a cloth interior I see? Rust looks like it's bubbling or cracking up the paint. Weird location right level with the door handle. Bottom where the rocker panels are doesn't surprise me.

ya its a bit rusty at the rocker panels ,,and yes its cloth lol,,but today i changed one of the front tires cuz it didnt match the other one it was a 225 65 16,,and the other one was 225 55 16 now there all 55 and i reset the computer and i also noticed that when i start the car the service engine soon light is not there i never seen it i guess its burnt out lol,,i havent felt that thing happen so im keeping my fingers crossed


n e way thanks for all your help guys and im gonna take it easy on the thing for now ,,maybe store it and drive the sable wagon with the vulcan for the winter .....

its not that i want to get rid of it ,,this is the car i always wanted ,,but i got it at the brokest time in my life so this car does me no good at the moment ,,but on the other hand it has no cam failure or tranny failure yet and these things can be prevented if money was involved i mean i can store it till i have money but i already have 2 other taurus and im thinking of getting a jeep so if u want this sho i will give it up for 1300 and i still loose a bit but whatever,,

back disks and pads changed
imrc box and cable changed
gas filter changed
ps fluid flushed wit mobil 1 syn
new battery
all windows repaired ,,,2 were not working
new wiper blades
crank position sensor changed
4 spark plugs in the front changed ,,oem plugs
and it has a panel k&n air filter
it has been anti rusted but not were the rockers are so.............

let me know
