My ATX hit 120k the other day and now that schools out and I'm working I have some money to finally get the 60k done. I would love to get Jason Kings ecc tuner but I know maintance comes first. Does anyboby have an elebrate description of the valve lash adustment procedure that i could print and show to my mechanic? About how many hours would it take to ajust the valves, and change the gaskets (pull wells have oil in them too). He does good honest work for $35/hr and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself. But I am going to watch and learn and clean out the intake with berrymans when its off the motor. Thanks for the help guys! After the 60k its time for some mods baby! burn_out

I highly recommend you purchase the 60K video from Mark N. It details everything you need to do and he goes through the whole procedure. I believe it costs $20. BTW, Mark's member name is drivinhard.

If you're going to pay someone to do this, I would suggest finding someone who's done this type of work before. It's really not that big of a deal if you follow instructions and pay attention to detail and it is done all the time by first timers. It just looks scary.

If a person hasn't done it before it's going to take quite a long time. It's not so much the adjustment itself, but the prep work, dis-assembly and re-assembly that takes a lot of time.

When Greg & Chris did mine we just did the valve adjustment, plugs, wires & t-stat. I got there close to 7:30 a.m. I think and I left at about 9:00 p.m. Of course, we did go out for breakfast and took several extended breaks and watched part of the SZ video from last year. They are "old timers" when it comes to doing 60k work.

Look around here for someone...there's bound to be someone in your area that's on here that's done it before that would be willing to help. Also, I realize that RI is a hike, but Fred & Eric are there and I know they do a good job. For me it would be worth the drive if I lived over there.

Valve lash isn't unique to the SHO, so your mechanic should at least have a conceptual understanding of it, if not practical experience. It's pretty common with aluminum heads. If he's completly foreign to the concept, you might want to consider finding a mechanic with more SHO experience, even if it costs you a little more (could end up costing you LESS in the long run...) I'm sure someone on the board can suggest a good SHO mechanic in your area.

Another resource in addition to the Mark Nunnally 60K video would be the Ford shop manual. There's always one or two on eBay for short money, or you can pay the big buck$ and order it from www.helminc.com. It has Ford's detailed procedure for adjusting valve lash and the 60K in general. Try searching for "taurus service" on eBay.

You have a personal email containing my detailed valve gapping procedure. This should take much of the mystery away.

When Greg & Chris did mine
man you show up late and only help for 1 1/2 hours and Bizzy will leave you out of the credits....

Hot,

Being my first time last weekend just taking off the intake and cleaning it out, I would say it looks alot more intimidating than it really is. I had a blast doing it. Next time I will take the valve covers off and do the shims and plug well seals.

Greg (a non forum reader and referred to my Huntervf as "My Friend with the 92") is moving on the first of July, so When I get back, I will have to start that other part of the 60K.....Bizzy, get your hinney out here.

buy the video, watch it and tell me it doesnt look really simple.
