Need help painting a fender

I had a major boo boo with my car last night and it needs a new fender. I was lucky enough to find one at 1 of 3 junk yards I visited today, but unlucky enough to get the right color. I have a Performance White 93 and I found a nice fender that couldn't be any redder.

I am looking for advice painting this fender so it doesn't look too bad. I saw a thread here where someone used rattle cans on a fender and it didn't come out too bad. This is what I plan on doing.

What I've gathered so far is to sand it enough just to get the clearcoat off so new paint sticks. After sanding apply some kind of primer.... Then go to work with the white paint, and finally cover it with a clear spray. I'm looking for tips and suggestions.

The duplicolor can "PERFORMANCE CLEAR" will yellowish the white.... Tried it on my intake and it does that.

But on the black , the clear is great....

I donno if ppl have suggestions , as for the clear coat..

I believe that was SHO Continental that posted the thread. His did turn out really good. I think you have the right idea. Sand it down some. Then use some primer, then paint, then clear coat. As for the right clear coat, it may have yellowed cerberu's intake because of the heat. It may be fine for a fender. Someone else may know.

It yellowed on application , not as white as before. Maybe i sprayed too much?

Matter of fact , the intake is still in my basement (making the swap at the moment)

I have the Oxford White Solid color code. Should I still use a clearcoat? The helms doesn't specify clearcoat for that color.

I think oxford white doesn't use a clearcoat(At least for the gen 1s). I'm not sure if the gen 2 had a clear coat. My car should be oxford white but it wasn't repainted the right color

I'm gonna go without and see what happens for now. If the fender looks good, I'm gonna try to figure out how to do some bodywork and fix my door. Does it kinda work like spackling a hole in the wall? I'm pretty good at that. I have a crease dent on one side of my car and it's annoying. I'll get a pic up before I take the thing apart for grins. It's kinda bad.

It depends on how deep the crease is... You should not lay bondo/duraglass more than 1/8 of an inch thick, else it will crack out/shrink. If it is deep either try and get on the inside and knock it out with a ballpeen hammer, or drill 1/8th inch holes and use pull hooks directionally opposite of the way the dent/crease was made, get it as flat as possible and puddy away. After the bondo/whatever you will need sand smooth and spray with a sealant/adhesion promotor before the base coat... then prime/sand/prime/sand till it looks good and paint away.

As far as rattle cans, I would get a cheapie gun, like an astro or such and spray it right. Rattle can paint uses solvents to keep the paint liquid that then disolve away just leaving a layer of paint. Where if you paint it with a gun with real paint/hardener it creates a STRONG chemical reaction to make the paint ALOT less likely to flake and chip off.

Personally, I'd advice against attempting to do your own body work. Body work is one of those things that are just better left off to someone who already know what they are doing.

On the fender though, heres some tips. Assuming there is nobody work needed.

1. Using an abrasive pad, like grey Scotchbrite, scuff the entire fender until the fender is dull.

2.Using some aerosol glass cleaner, wipe clean the entire fender.

3.If you're gonna use spray can paint;do several light/medium coats evenly sprayed on the whole fender. Let the last coat dry for about 10min, then do the same with a can of rattle can clear.

No need to sand off the clear coat not use primer.
