I just replaced my cps and front seal on my 92. I followed the directions from shotimes and shophoenixproject.com exactly.
After finishing the job i started the car. It started ok but a little humming/whining from the belt area. i drove it about a half a mile around the block and parked it and there was rubber smelling smoke coming from the same area. WHAT DID I DO WRONG?

Sounds like your belt is either misaligned somehow and its rubbing on something in there. Take off your top timing belt plastic cover and look at the belt(did u replace it??) you'll be able to see if its rubbing since the edges would be frayed some. if so, do some more investigating. its a PITA to pull all the covers off and look but mucho better then nuking a timing belt while driving!

I put my timing belt on backwards the first time I did the front 60K. Really simply to do. That would be the first thing I would check. Pull the top timing belt cover and look for the belt to be frayed.

You don't want to have that timing belt break while driving. Won't hurt the motor but you'll have a lot more work to do than simply pulling the timing cover.

Last time I had the rubber burning belt smell my crank pulley started seperating. The acc belt alignment was weird and I had a **** of a time figuring out which pulley was off a little. Could be bad tensioner or pulley bearing you just have to be methodical and look at everything in each belt path.

Yeah don't feel bad. I put my tensioner pulley on backwards one time and it squealed like **** and didn't turn. I almost smoked an accessory belt. At least you can just pull the top timing cover to check it...if it's on backwards...well that sucks to have to take alot of that stuff apart again.

I need to put my washer in because i did the same thing.. I haven't ran it yet. i caught it before i started it.. But yeah.. That washer keeps the belt from walking off the sprockets. The most common thins it rubson the the tensioner bracket for the a/c alt belt.

i didnt forget the washer
we were thinking the timing belt is too tight
and how do i know if the belt is on backwards? i know that shophoenix said the writing on the timing belt should be readable looking from the driver side
the belt is about 8 months old and has two separated white line that i thought should line up with the two camshafts and the two white lines together are the difference between the atx and mtx

General hint for first time dis-assembly: Take plenty of pictures with a digital camera. It only takes a few minutes and can be a big help in assuring everything goes back together correctly.
