Hi everyone,
i've been excperiencing some anyoing problems with both of my SHO's this past time.

problem with the 1993 ATX SHO 3.2L.
i bought the car in july 2003, i drove it normally and stuff till like a week ago started leaking coolant and overheated. i replaced the thermostat (the problem for overheating), and the lower radiator hose was the problem for leaking).

after i replaced those didnt leak and started to run cooler but the arrow showed the temp of the engine like more 70% hoter ( like runing overheating) hot the idea to replace the temp switch but after replacing that didnt due anything difference still the same temp range ( but the engine when you touched it was cooler then ever- runing cool and normal) after 2 days in the moorning when i was going to work i seen steam coming out of mny hood and coolant leaking which i never recognized and realized where it was coming from, i added some coolant at the reservoir but rant what to see the coolant reservoir was full; of coolant and it wasnt tranfering ( circulating) it to the radiator, i dont understand why that happens. if anyone could tell me what might be wrong with that or is anything wrong with it with the coolant by not circulating - heating and leaking not often)
anything is apprecieted.

thanks

adi

You should add coolant directly to the radiator instead of to the overflow tank. You can add coolant to the overflow after the radiator is full.

wow dude... that's a mouthful. Your english is pretty bad. With a name like Adi, I doubt it's your first language so we'll let it go without further nasty criticism.

I don't understand what you're saying. Where is the needle pointing to at the highest point? Many people have said the temperature gauge in the cluster is not very accurate. After installing a seperate temperature gauge, I've noticed my cluster temp gauge doesn't rise as high before the fan kicks on. I recommend installing a seperate water temperature gauge to get a more accurate water temperature reading.

These cars have aluminum heads that can warp when the engine overheats. Do not try and drive on your car when it overheats. Pull over, pop the hood, and wait.

Is your cooling fan coming on when it is supposed to? When I replaced my radiator recently, my cooling fan did not come on, and I ended up having to replace the ECT sensor to get the fan working properly again...

To find the source of the leak, you should start the car when it is cool and let it warm up while you closely monitor the entire cooling system..

When your engine is warm, squeeze the upper radiator hose and make sure it is hot and firm to the touch, evidencing that coolant running through it.

hi man,
hey sorry about all that confusion up there , but english is my second language man , cause i come from venezia, italia amigo mio wink . thats why you might not understand me.
shrug

well yeah back to the problem with my atx SHO.
as you guys said to add coolant directly to the radiator and after to the reservoir. i've done that. but now what i am asking is that : why the coolant in the reservoir never goes down from it's level?? headbang so i am thinking that the coolant in the reservoir in my 93 atz sho is not circulating into the radiator like my 92 sho mtx does. ..

is anything related with this from the water pump or is it time to replace the radiatior???? shrug i dont know if the guy that had the car before than me done those stuff.. so thats why i am asking you guys :p

Back to business:

If you have filled the radiator, take the car for a nice long drive. In my experience, it takes a little while for the coolant to start drawing from the reservoir.

The only other thing I think is possible is that the new thermostat is upside down. Since you have several SHOs, I guess you know to check this.

If it is not sucking coolant from the resevoir I would venture to say the radiator cap is bad.

Whoa! Yeah he got your name wrong but are you anti-Muslim or something? shrug

Anyway, when my rad cap went bad I had coolant leaking from the overflow tank, that line that exits to the ground. It usually occured after shutting off the engine when hot. Stopped after I put on a new cap.

If it is not being drawn in the is a vacuum leak somewhere upon cool down. Any leak will do this as will the aforementioned bad pressure cap. Take it to an auto parts store and have it tested or just buy a new one.

Go here for a good education on how the cooling system works on a modern car engine.

Also, you can get a pressure tester, which is good for finding leaks in coolant hoses and stuff. You just pump it up, and look for where the coolant is leaking/dripping/seeping or spraying out.
I rented one from Autozone, and they went out of business, so basically I BOUGHT one at Autozone.

I speak Italian, too. Well, 3 words, really.
Gran Turismo Omologato
If all goes well, I'll have one in December.

On my replacement 2 year old Modine the drivers side tank was leaking at the seam at the bottom. I took it out today and put in a new Visteon which I believe is OEM. There really wasn't much difference between them. But I decided to try crimping the drivers side tank down a bit with the vise-grips. The divers side is not crimped as tight as the passenger side I found out. Possibly due to the fact the ATX cooler is on the passenger side and it is a bit beefier.

The Modine was the same way. It isn't hard to do and I would try this before replacing the radiator.
