If you are in front of the car looking at your tranny, just above level of the subframe is a bolt with a head that you can stick a 3/8in socket extender into. If you take that out you can pump a bit of the oil out to check it. It should be even with the bottom of the hole.

To check the clutch you can pull the starter out and get a good light and a mirror into the starter hole. The only other way is to seperate the engine and the tranny.

To check it, all you do is take the plug out that Devin is talking about...if stuff leaks out when you remove the plug, then the level is fine. If not, you put fluid in till it comes out. Type of fluid: You have many choices from GM Syncromesh, Redline Fluid, but our fearless (yet very cute) leader and resident tranny expert Bizzy likes MOBIL 1 Synthetic ATF. I use it and love it.

Now, since it is a 90, it is likely the original stuff, you can drain out the old and put in new in no time at all. There is a bolt about 5 inches below the plug mentioned above that when removed, will drain all the fluid out...WARNING: dont move a thing when you take that bolt out. Meaning, put it in gear, set the parking brake leave it alone. Remove the bolt and when the fluid it out, put it all back in. That bolt keeps stuff in place and is very important.

Refill the tranny with the fluid of your choice...its a PITA, but I have found some decent solutions to draining it and filling it:

Another option for draining the fluid is to install a drain plug on the case. Somewhere around here (maybe on shotimes.com) there is a diagram showing the right spot to drill and tap. Then use a brass plug with teflon tape.
Either way will work, but this way you don't have to worry about things moving. I fill mine with a funnel, a long tube and a helper. I am currently running syncromesh and like it....I might try Mobil 1 just as an experiment.

oh yeah since nobody mentioned it

there is no clutch fluid in these cars, the clutch is operated manually by a cable connected to the pedal........... I kinda like the setup, no master cylinder, no slave cylinder, no bleeding....just works

Yeah, I really like the cable clutch; a guy I worked with last summer had a Civic with a hydraulic clutch that he had neglected to bleed..ever...and he didn't have a clutch anymore one day. Had to rev match all shifts, which was pretty hellacious on his synchros. Of course, I guess our cables could always break, but I haven't heard of that happening too much.

As stated transmisson fluid is a matter of preference and of course there are some picky transmissions out there. I use Valvoline maxlife dex/merc atf in mine and I love the way the car shifts. I've had no problems and therefor have no reason to try another brand.
