i know someone who has a gen 3 that sucked a velve. im thinking about picking it up. would it be easier/cheaper to repair or replace. im going to assume that there are no used motors around. i have a post in the classifieds that im looking for one. i dont expect much response. if anything i can pick up the car and part it out. its a 98 VERY clean.

:thankyou:

it most likely spun a cam rather than sucked a valve. at that point, it's gonna be the better idea to simply replace the engine with a welded one.

I saw a zero mile short block on ebay for $395. Still need heads though.

depending on damage to heads they "should" be able to be rebuilt. mine where..

the only reason i would say find a good(not cam failed) short block.

is because i went thru my stock motor in around 4k and it cam failed, and i also picked up another cam failed short block for cheap! and it also did the same. so i assumed the bearing get damaged when this happens but one had a bent rod and the other 1 had 1 bad bearing.

i also bought my short block that im running now off the ebay add. $395 was a steal motor came as described! and i have around 22k on my short block.

also running the cam that failed right now for about 30k after it failed and has been welded. a lot wouldnt go this route.

and while your on the topic of heads and such your gonna need to figure out head gaskets. im running used very low mile gaskets and head bolts.

I would get it, remove the motor and have a look, but still keep looking for a replacement. You might get lucky on the fix, or finding a good replacement. It doesn't take much to write a car off these days, so a driveline will come up sooner or later.
I wouldn't buy it to part it out, a lot of work for sketchy return.

The drive gear of the cam is pressed on the camshaft instead of being keyed, or roll pinned, or welded.
This drive gear breaks free of the camshaft and "walks" around the cam, throwing the motor out of time. Sometimes it gets so out of time, the valve hits the piston, and that is when you need another engine.

i wonder how likely it is that it just broke free and it just needs to be welded?the guy who owns the car is a *** head so he might not know what hes talking about when he said it swallowed a valve. my brother in laws jeep swallowed a valve and he may be just saying that because the symptoms are similar. ill have to get a hold of him and find out

You need to pull the valve covers and take good res. pics of the camshafts. If the cams are bad you need to pull the heads and see if there is damage to the cylinder and piston.

I would guess it is extremely likely. Aside from the cam sprocket problem, these engines are very reliable.

If you buy this car and somehow fix it (rebuild or swap), you will have a first class vehicle.
I have never been able to get past the styling so I have never owned one, but they are reputed to be the best of the SHOs. They have a 1 piece stamping for the body / floor and are extremely rigid. They are reputed to be stable at high speeds and the motor has about the same HP as the V6 and is smooth and plenty powerful.
They are a world class car at an economy price.

I've seen the valve stems get so carboned up they stick and pop the head off the valve leaving it embedded in the piston.

i have a friend who has one of those scopes that i can just look down the spark plug hole and see whats in the combustion chamber
