You could also have a vacuum leak at the intake to head mating surface or any of the intake runner couplers. Not likely but possible. Test wires:

that should trigger a code of some kind. backfire up there could be vacuum leak, problem with fuel delivery, or timing is off. Since you have had the intake off several times I would check into vacuum leak and take the intake off, take your time and loosen the snakes so they are flexy until you get a good seal at the head and tighten everything up. I think I would have to confirm timing is correct at this point and then go after fuel and spark. These cars have been known to jump a tooth or two at the timing belt and is worth looking into

I think it will be a vacuum leak, since I've seen these cars with the cams off a couple teeth and they did not backfire (although that is a possibility). The intake hoses are old and hard, and you almost always need to loosen them to get a good seal when you reinstall the intake.

I made that mistake in the beginning too and why I mentioned loosening up the couplers. Helps it seat flat correctly and seals at the runners when they are loose first

If it turns on for a second, then goes off, you probably need more fluid in your brake fluid reservoir

Try cleaning the plugs and make sure the boots are snug, on the 1st bank they can be tough especially on the 3rd cylinder

I had no codes on my previous 95 MTX and the fuel pressure regulator failed. It was up at 80psi and I had no codes, but a constant stumble around 2000 to 2500 RPM. Putting in a new regulator helped some, but it also needed plug wires to get it running better. Check the pressure at the Schrader valve
