Anyone have any experience changing the transmission lockout lever on the steering column? I'm curious as to how far the column has to be tore-down to access/replace the lever.

You shouldn't have to remove much more than the column covers since it is right about the cylinder. I think it uses a Torx bolt.

The 95 Helms book shows a column shift, and a console shift steering column assembly. I'll assume (I hate assuming) the MTX uses the console style. The parts list shows vacuum switch and a solenoid, but thats for the ATX. Without really digging into one I can't say I know of an MTX lockout feature. Then again, the book shows the slotted wheel at the lower end of the steering shaft as a "suspension height sensor control ring".

Column shift was my guess as well. However it appears these images are for the two most common Gen I/II Taurus applications - Console Shift (Automatic) and Column Shift (2.5L MTX-III) - as neither image even shows the opening in the upper steering column shroud [item 6] for the Manual Transmission Lockout Lever.

The lockout lever is somehow integrated with the ignition lock cylinder, in that when the key is rotated from the LOCK position to the RUN position, you can both see and hear the lockout lever release and snap-aft toward the steering wheel as soon as you pass the 12-o'clock position. The lockout lever must be moved forward toward the dash in order to rotate the lock cylinder from the OFF position to the LOCK position where the key can be removed, otherwise the key cannot be rotated past the 12-o'clock position to the LOCK position (10-o'clock).

Here are the three base numbers from what I've been able to dig-up:

  • [-3F527-] (Manual Transmission Lockout Lever)
  • [-3F530-] (Manual Transmission Lockout Lever Pin)
  • [-3F532-] (Manual Transmission Lockout Lever Spring)

In the exploded view it looks like items 42 [-3F527-] and 43 [-3F530-], but it does not show the spring [-3F532-] nor the exploded view line-trace showing where in attaches to the upper steering column housing, or how it integrates into the ignition lock cylinder.
