So I bought my 95 MTX SHO back in April and everything has been running smoothly. In July, the Low Coolant light began coming on when I started the car in the morning before work, and was off when I started it up again around lunch time. Lately, it's been coming on every time I start it up. In my 94 MTX, I was having the same problem as a result of a cracked coolant reservoir. I did a quick inspection of the reservoir in my 95 and did not notice any cracks. So, I decided to add some coolant to the reservoir yesterday afternoon figuring that the system just may be running low on coolant. I went to wash up the SHO real nice, and on the way back to my apartment I decided to mess around on the highway with my buddy who has an RX-8. After downshifting into third doing about 65, flooring it until about 85, and coming to a complete stop moments later, there was a pile of smoke (which smelled like anti-freeze) coming out from under the hood. My buddy called me on the cell and asked what was the problem, as he could also see the smoke coming out of the back? He said it looked like it was coming out from the exhaust pipes, but I know there couldn't have I know my head gaskets are fine(I hope). I haven't really floored it around much since then, but could this be a result of a leaking hose, radiator, or even heater core? Would the leak cause smoke to come from under the hood or exhaust? Thanks for any help...

The low coolant sensor is at the bottom of the resivour. Over time it get covered in gunk. Clean it off and you should be good.

It sounds like you have a leak in the system. It is not hard for it to look like smoke is coming from the exhaust. Coolant may be finding its way from the water pump and leaking onto one of the converters. Making all kinds of fun smoke from under the hood, and behind the car. I would start to look around for leaks.

Every so often I have to add some to mine as well (makeup for evaporation??). I've found that it's a fine balance between having too little to keep the light off and too much. If I add a little too much, the first time I get the engine hot it will push some coolant out the overflow tube on the coolant bottle.

Worried me the first time it happened, but that was around 90,000 miles ago....

Maybe you put in a little too much and when the coolant came out the overflow tube it got on the exhaust pipe.

All three of my driven sho's have leaked coolant from a mystery location. Never can find where its coming from but i can smell it and never see it. so i just top it off when need be which isn't too often. I dont worry about it. Just a minor inconvenience but i dont drive it much too so its not a big deal.

Thanks for the replies gang. Shelby, I think you're right! As I was saying, it was shortly after I added coolant to the reservoir that smoke began pouring from under the hood. It did it that one time and never again, even after taking it to the 1/4 mile strip. AND, the coolant light has not some on since. :thumb:
