the reverse piston is most likely cracked, and the crack is now bad enough that it won't hold pressure to engage the reverse clutch.

On SLO with AX4S, the reverse is the first gear to fry when the transmission loose all (or almost all) his fluid... It's happen to me after a hose break loose on highway. The guy at the shop spoke about friction disc which was completely fry. (= transmission rebuilt too)
