Life Expectancy of your Tranny? Car Reliability?

After hearing some people advise me of the troubles the SHO's come incontact with dealing in the transmission area...i am considering putting of the purchase of a 96 SHO with 70,000 miles. How has everyone elses transmission held up? I was hoping for a reliable performance sedan and the SHO looks like the way to go...How has the reliablity of your SHO been the time you have owned it? Any complaints? Thanks for your input!

Hmm....now the engine itself will definatly hold up for ya...as for the transmission I will have to refer you to V8SHO's site http://v8sho.com/sho/Transmission_Poll.htm is a good place to start. As for me I will love my car even if it goes through 10 transmissions I don't care.

I just changed my fluid at 30k at the Ford dealer. My 91 5.0 Mustang tranny went out at about 50k and was covered by extended warranty. That was close to $1200 but I had the warranty. My current warranty is until March2004 or 75k.I had done no maintenance on the Mustang transmission and I truly beat the car nearly every time I drove it. I do the same thing with my SHO. But I did make that one fluid change at 30k...will see if any differance in the long run. I have taken a much more mature approach since I was the boy racer of 1990.

It all depends on how the car was driven and if they taken care of it. I bought my 98 with 65K on the clock and tranny works fine (knock on wood). I look at this was if the car was a city car than most likey the did average 45 mph in O/D (not good causes heat to build up faster). If it was taken care of then is should last. I guess what I am trying to say, you just have to check the tranny or take it to a place to have it checked for you. Best bet. My AOD in my 91 LX when out in 100K (these trannys were worst then the SHO). I change my fluid after I bought it a realized I didnt need to it was clean.

Get an extended warranty plan on the drivetrain. Most car dealers offer them. Then as soon as you can, get the trans flushed and install synthetic ATF and an aftermarket cooler.

I echo the above. I have now put over 20k on mine, and have had zero transmission problems. But I do not drag race it and I do change the transmission fluid and filter. And I put in a trans fluid temp guage to keep a further eye on it. But if you do not mistreat it, I suspect the transmission on the Gen III to be as solid as, if not more so, than any other auto shifter on a performance sedan out there.

If the tranny don't go the TC will. Anyone who has the tranny pulled should beef up the TC too.

Depends on season. This time of the year it is pretty cold out there, and the trans fluid temp might get up to 120F during a lot of city stop and go. In high summer, with the outside temp at 30+C (over 90F), the same long time of city stop and go could bring the trans fluid up to 170F, or even 180F, but that is the highest I have seen it go. Normal during the summer seems to be about 140F. Normal oil temp under the same situation is about 180F.

I just edited the temps from indicating C to indicating F were they had been in error. Sorry 'bout that.

Opps Yes, they were supposed to be in F, not C. I am so used to putting in C, I messed up.

It is interesting to note it is a very old thread, as mentioned. I notice one of my posts from a couple of years ago when I had only put about 20K on the car. I have put over 60K on it now and still no indications of any transmission problems. Should turn 100K shortly and runs just fine.

FPS told me that unless the tranny was specifically set up to run synthetic that it would not last as long as it would with stock FURD fluid.

Not exactly the most reliable source. They filled mine with Redline synthetic. But wait it failed 12k later....
