Keys

I made some duplicate keys the other day for my 96 Gen. III from normal regular keys they had at the local hardware store. But the strange thing was that The keys could open the doors, trunk, and run the acessories. But when I turned the key to start the car, the car would start and almost immediately shut down. So, I was wondering why this happens and if I want to make spares will I have to go to a dealership.

Your original key has a computer chip in it. Its a security feature. I believe you may be able to "program" the new key....but I'm not exactly sure how. Might want to check with the dealership.

The keys cost approx $50 at Ford (maybe cheaper) then if you have the original two keys you can try to program it by using the owners manual as guidance. If not the this would cost approx 25 to 30 dollars at Ford to program key. Hope this helps had to buy one for my old 99GT (same security key type) cost about 75 dollars. If I had two keys I could have save the programming fee.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought it was, I have both keys but I have one my mom needs another and my brother, with whom I share the car with , also needs another. Anyway thanks for the info
