I picked up my first SHO, White 92 with white rims and 155k but runs strong, about two weeks ago on April 16th. She runs great and I impress everyone that sees it. A couple problems though ...

1) About a week ago she started to pop under the hood and there was hesitation as i accelorated from 2k-3k in rpm, then it would stop, but the pulling wasn't as hard. A good buddy of mines looked under the hood and cleaned out the front spark plug wells and one of the back ones, the other two were impossible to get to almost. The plug wells were pretty much almost drowned in oil. Then we hosed the engine down after we were done with all the caps back on. She ran good and stong again for about 10 min and then back to the hesitation and lack of pull. Can anyone tell me what's up ? Now she hesitate and she shutters while accelorating still.

2)There is an odd noise coming from the car when i turn the steering wheel from side to side at a still. It almost seems like it's coming from the steering column it's self. Almost a crunching noise really.

please help, I want my baby to run fine and dandy again. thanks a lot guys ... btw her names is CHLOE'

Hi Gene,

It sounds like it needs it's 60k done (see www.shotimes.com ) The oil in the plug wells is common when the seals in the covers go, Easy to replace when doing the 60k. The poping sound could be that one of the plugs (or plug wire's) are shot.

1. Then we hosed the engine down after we were done with all the caps back on. Repeat after me, I will not hose down my engine, I will not hose down my engine, (continue a few hundred times) jk :D , This engine has sensors everywhere and hosing the engine down causes damage (or destroys) them. The only true way to clean it is take a pail, a couple rags and a brush and meticulously clean it by hand. Otherwise you can end up spending $100s (if not thousands) on replacement sensors, and on the block. Water can seep into the spark plug wells and past the spark plugs. From the hesititaion you speak of it could be the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) got wet and is on the go. If your car dies for no reason, that would be it. I would also pull codes, that might help diagnose a lot, shotimes shows how to do it with a piece of wire.

2. Kind of hard to diagnose a 'crunchy' noise. It could be a suspension part or your power steering. Have you checked your power steering fluid level? Driver side spring?

Hope this helps you out.

When oil gets in there chances are high that both plugs and wires are shot. There is no reliable short cut for this. Get the moisture out of the plug wells without removing the plugs. You don't want the sludge with sediment in those wells going into the cylinder. Run a search on this topic to find the correct Fel-pro gasket kit from Autozone.com. Get oem plugs and wires from Fordpartsnetwork.com. (best price). Cheap aftermarket plugs and wires don't work well on these cars. Hey, it's your first $200-250 on parts! It won't be your last. wink

The popping noise has become less consistant or even non existant ( ooh that rhymes, rapper time) when i drive now. Her hesitation is speratic (Sp?) And this morning my second problem went away. Thanks for all the great replies, hope it's not the plugs and wires that are shot...

Gene, if there was oil in there before it will return if not addressed. Start putting aside a few bucks for a new parts fund. The smart money is on new seals, plugs and wires in your future. wink

By the way there is a Bay Area SHO club in your parts. I would suggest you contact them sometime. They got it goin' on over there.

listen man......you NEED to replace the valve cover gaskets, plug well seals, spark plugs, and wires. The valve cover gaskets and plug well seals come in a set called the Felpro valve cover gasket set. They sell it at www.autozone.com for i think 72.99 The spark plugs and wires can be found at www.fordpartsnetwork.com the plugs are 3.99 each and the wires are 84.99 The engine hesitating is because the car is probably only running on 3 cylinders or so. It's misfiring because the plugs are drained in oil so the spark can't get from the wire to the plug. You will be so happy with the results if you replace these things. Good luck.
