I have searched the Forum and if this subject is definitively answered I overlooked it:

1. Can the "guts" of this module be repaired?

2. There are references that this is a solid state module. Is the fuel pump relay inside actually a solid state relay (transistor) or is it a mechanical relay with contacts?

3. If the relay is mechanical with contacts, are intermittent failures usually due to oxidized contacts and if so can they be cleaned?

4. I did notice a post which recommended cutting the wires to the IRCM and installing an external generic fuel pump relay. Of course that would work, but I would prefer to keep everything original if possible. However, if necessary what suppliers and part numbers are recommended?

I just bought a module from my for dealer for my kids 93ATX it was $142.00 . I took my module apart but the relays are sealed units so it would be impossible to clean and I tried with no luck to purchase the relays from an electronics parts house. I have seen the post about wiring an outside relay to run the fuel pump but I don't know if this really works since the IRCM module also contains quite a bit of discreet electronics which may drive the relays. If you try this you may end up overloading the fuel pump driver signal from the EEC computer and then you may need to replace the computer ( I don't know how much current the computer can safely handle). I don't like to gamble so I played the safe bet and just bought the new IRCM module from ford.

The IRCM is a simple device: 4 relays, a load resistor for the fan (I think that's what it's for) some snubbing diodes for the relays and a few other odds and ends. The relays are standard automotive relays soldered to the circuit board. If you wanted to you could make an IRCM replacement with a 4 relay holder and a little box to hold any extra stuff. I have a detailed diagram of the MTX IRCM around here somewhere....

1. Do you have a supplier name and part # for the std automtive relay that will fit the IRCM circuit board?

2. Could you post the detailed diagram when you find it?

Thank you!

IRCM is open...........Does anyone know which of the 4 relays is the fuel pump relay (Obviously I can drill out the rivets that hold the pcb and probe with a meter but thought I'd ask first)?

There are 2 Bosch relays......p/n 0 332 014 162

and 2 Omron relays........p/n G8H-US-007108

EDIT: I went back and probed as best as possible and it appears that the Omron relay which is the fartherest from the harness connector is the fuel pump relay. If anyone else has tested and knows for sure, please comment. Thanks

Here is an internal schematic of the '93 mtx CCRM.

Any chance someone has a copy of the 93 ATX IRCM (or CCRM) schematic? There are some differences from the one shown above for the 93 MTX.

Thanks

Thank you SHOZ123 :hail:

I found a relay that should fit on the PCB as a replacement for the fuel pump relay with a little modification. I'll post details and results later.

Please do! I can't find a new ccrm anywhere.

Success!!!...............:)

First, you will have to grind the 2 rivets that hold the IRCM together and the 2 that hold in the PCB. There are 4 relays....2 large and 2 small.....The fuel pump relay is the small one fartherest from the harness connector right beside one of the larger relays.

I bought a NAPA relay part # AR606 for $12.50 and modified it with a Dremel by cutting down the 4 terminal lugs to the size of the PCB lugs by using the original as a model. I also ground off the extra lug flush with the bottom of the relay base so that it would not short against the PCB trace under it.

Caution......I would not recommend this for the shaky handed, fumble fingered or patience challenged individual. It's almost like a dentist grinding a tooth. Also, the circuit board is double sided and it will probably take a soldering gun to generate enough heat to melt the solder on both sides so be careful so as not to burn up the PCB traces.

I then used POP rivets to put the IRCM back together.

If I hadn't wanted to keep the car as original as possible, the above posted external relay mod by Herman Anker would work just fine and would be much simplier to accomplish. Note that the circuits are the same on the ATX and the MTX EXCEPT where you connect to Pin 11 on the MTX you would connect to Pin 18 on the ATX. You can see this from the 2 schematics of the inards of the IRCM (or CCRM) posted by SHOZ123.

GOOD LUCK :thumb:

Also, thanks again for all the quality responses.:salute:
