I installed a new starter on my 95 ATX and when I was done and went to turn the key all I got was a whine. I took out the starter and connected the terminals to the battery and all it did was spin it did not shoot the gear mupwards as to engage the flywheel. Was I sold a bad starter? Also when I removed the starter the last time I forgot to disconnect the battery and I crossed the hot terminal and sent sparks flying, now there is no power, which fuse did I most likely blow?

There are different starters with different numbers of teeth. Don't know much more than that off hand. Just make sure you got the right starter.

I am pretty sure I got the corretc starter, I got it from carquest and I had them triple check that it was the correct starter. Even with that said when I took the starter out and jumped it with the battery you can see the gear spin but it does not fling outwards to engage the flywheel.

If it is just spinning, and not making any grinding sounds then the bendix (sp?) on the starter is failing to function.

If it was an incorrect, operational starter you would here nasty grinding. Starter gear to flywheel grinding.

Now re-read what you just posted.

Your "new" starter is not working right. Take it back and get one that works. wink

Also, like I stated above I must of blown some fuse because I tried to take the starter off with the battery connected and blew something... Which fuse did I most likely fry? I looked and can't find the one, unless I am looking in the wrong place.

no....autozone starters are as cheaply remanufactured as can possibly be....stick with carquest...have them give you another one

Personally, Im a Motorcraft guy.

But for something like a starter I guess anywhere that offers a lifetime warranty.

I installed an Autolite reman. starter from Kragen in my truck 30k ago and have never had any issues. Lifetime warranty, and less than half the price of a Motorcrat reman.

I got lucky a few months ago with a junkyard SHO. The thing had a brank spankin new alternator and starter. So I snagged them both, with a bunch of other stuff for next to nothing :D thumb
