It's mounted on the intake facing the firewall.

Follow the vacuum line from the little black canister to it. The other vacuum line goes from it to the two vacuum motors that open/close the secondaries.

Idle Air Control = Inlet Air Solenoid ?

Thanks for responding you all. I thought the picture in the last post is called the Idle Air Control. I'm probably having a terminology problem. I have replaced the Idle Air Control recently.

My car is cold starting a little hard (2 or 3 turns) and when it does start, the tach roams up to 1500 or 2000 and then drops and tries to die. I can press the accelerator a little and keep it from dying. It starts fine after warming up. After I run it for awhile I pop an error 81. It started after I put on a new y-pipe. It runs good although I may be burning a little more oil than usual. I have to check this.

Can you tell me about those secondary intake solenoids (motors) on my 89' downstream of the Idle Air Control, or point me to a reference? The 81 code points to the secondary intake area. I have checked my grounds and PCM wiring for shorts and found nothing.

No, that is the IAC, not the IAS. Follow my previous instruction to locate the IAS.

Craig,
Your symptom is of either a vacuum leak or an IAC fault. The IAS is an electrically-controlled vacuum switch. The PCM controls it to control the opening and closing of the secondaries.

FWIW, the NAME of the IAS was changed in 93 in Ford's documentation to IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control) valve which more clearly identifies its function.

Can a larger MAF cause the IAC to fault?

ProjectSHO89,

I did put a 73mm MAF and higher flow air filter on recently. The IAC is new. Can a larger MAF cause the IAC to fault?
