How crucial is a proper spark plug gap as far as engine efficiency goes? If the gap exceeds the specified number ".042 - .046" will there be a noticeable decline in performance, or will it not affect it that much?

The specified plug gap is to achieve the best engine performance and lowest emissions output for the 60,000 mile lifetime of the Motorcraft AGSP32PP plugs. You would be wise to gap the plugs to the small end of the gap range (.042") since the gap never gets smaller as the electrodes erode over the miles.
